Loch Rannoch and the peaks beyond fill the view from this two-storey lodge, a pet-friendly Highland hideaway that sleeps four in two bedrooms with room for two more in the lounge. That flexibility suits dog-loving couples, a family, or a group of six sharing the cost of a walking and water sports week. It sits within the Loch Rannoch Highland Club. Ancient pine forest wraps the hillside, and red squirrels, pine martens and red deer are regular company.
The kitchen/diner has French doors opening onto the balcony, perfect for letting the pooch get some fresh air. Next to it, the lounge has a choice of comfortable seating, a games table and a TV with DVD player, and a pull-down double bed for two. The double bedroom has an en-suite bathroom with a shower over the bath and WC, while the twin bedroom uses a separate bathroom of the same layout. A cot, highchair and stairgate can be requested. Outside, the balcony has space for alfresco drinks looking over the water, with sunsets towards Glencoe later in the day. Parking is in the site car parks on a first-come, first-served basis.
A pub and a shop are around 500 metres away in Kinloch Rannoch, the village once favoured by Victorians for its clean air and setting. The loch itself is on the doorstep for water sports. And for energetic pups, there are walking and cycling opportunities through the forest and the Munro of Schiehallion within easy reach for a climb. The beach is 14 miles away. Drive east for the Falls of Bruar (15.5 miles) and Blair Atholl (18 miles) at the southern edge of the Cairngorms. From Rannoch Station, the West Highland Line makes a scenic train run out to Mallaig.
