Westward Ho! in North Devon is named after the 19th century bestselling novel by Charles Kingsley, but this lovely seaside resort has come a long way since its Victorian heyday. Luxury holiday apartments line the promenade and landscaped gardens roll down to the seafront, hosting an L-shaped beach both rocky and then sandy. The western arm of the shoreline consists of roughly 1 mile of rockpools; it’s also home to an open-air tidal swimming pool. The part of the beach that reaches northwards is a wide 3-mile stretch hemmed into the Atlantic Ocean by a pebble ridge and the dunes of the beautiful lowlands of Northam Burrows Country Park.  

The burrows is a great place to wander – a wonderful mixture of natural habitats and wildlife unlike anywhere else on the Devon coast. You may well encounter wild ponies and grazing sheep on your walk. It’s also the location of England’s oldest golf course. Westward Ho! village itself has a very good selection of restaurants and pubs to enjoy of an evening like Morans, The Pier House and The Village Inn. Learn how to surf with one of the schools, there’s also plenty of scope for buying new kit in the village. There are some handy shops in the centre of Westward Ho! too; for a wider selection of supermarkets, shops, banks and petrol stations, head to Bideford (3 miles).
