Dog-friendly beaches in Southwold

Denes Beach

Stretching from Southwold in the north down to the River Blyth in the south, beautiful Denes Beach is a sand and shingle beach that offers a great place to stretch your legs with your canine companion. A promenade runs along behind the beach and it’s also backed by low dunes and marshland, offering a variety of habitats to discover.

Southwold Pier Beach

A classic British seaside destination, Southwold Pier Beach is home to a pier, beach huts and groynes too. One of our favourite Suffolk beaches for dogs and families, you’ll be spoilt for things to do during a visit to this quaint coastal town. Enjoy relaxed days with the family on the sand and shingle, and let your canine companion run free and splash through lapping waves.

Dog-friendly beaches in Lowestoft

Pakefield Beach

Step foot on the wide, flat shores of Pakefield Beach, a charming seaside destination for dogs and their pup parents backed by pretty cliffs that attract fossil hunters. Primarily made up of shingles and pebbles, this is a peaceful place just down the road from Lowestoft that’s great for a dog walk or ball game.

Lowestoft South Beach/Victoria Beach

Sitting just south of Great Yarmouth, popular Lowestoft is a traditional seaside town and offers a fine sand beach where your pup can leave pawprints as he or she trots about. A picturesque seafront and promenade ensure everyone remains refreshed, it’s a great beach for water sports if you want to get the adrenaline pumping, and there’s also a common area with a Children’s Corner, making it great for families.

Dog-friendly beaches in Thorpeness

Thorpeness Beach

The village of Thorpeness is a curious creation that was the brainchild of Glencairn Stuart Ogilvie, who created it as a magical, child-friendly destination. There’s a boating lake that’s shallow for kids, statues of characters from Peter Pan, and mock Tudor buildings. This fantastic dog-friendly beach in Suffolk is made up of shingles that shelves steeply, and sand is revealed at low tide.

Sizewell Beach

With nuclear power stations towering behind, Sizewell Beach is a unique and impressive place for a visit. Down beside the sea, you’ll find a peaceful, shingle shore, backed by dunes and a grassy area – and, as Sizewell is a working fishing village, you can watch fishing boats come and go from the beach too.

Dog-friendly beaches in Aldeburgh

Aldeburgh Beach

The vibrant coastal town of Aldeburgh is a creative place to explore, with a great cultural heritage including beautiful old beachfront buildings and a connection to the composer, Benjamin Britten. There’s a sculpture called The Scallop to celebrate the composer that sits down on the beach. Aldeburgh Beach is sand and shingle and popular to visit so you’ll be sure to be amongst it all on a visit here with your dog.  

Slaughden

Slaughden isn’t exactly a beach but instead an enchanting shingle spit dividing the River Alde and the sea, with stunning scenery all around to soak in. The Snape Footpath passes through Slaughden and dogs are welcome to wander this shingle spit; please keep them on lead to protect the wildlife that exists in this unique place.

Dog-friendly beaches in Walberswick

Walberswick Beach

Another delightful sand and shingle, dune-backed, dog-friendly beach in Suffolk, Walberswick Beach welcomes pups all year and is set beside the River Blyth estuary. The town is best known as the home of the Crabbing Championships which takes place on the Dunwich River right behind the beach. Walberswick Nature Reserve is right by the beach and is dog-friendly too so you can venture into the pretty reserve before letting your canine companion go for a doggy paddle in the sea.

Dog-friendly beaches in Felixstowe

Felixstowe Beach

Head to this port town to see massive ships coming and going from the largest container port in the UK, and enjoy traditional seaside amusements, a promenade, and a pier. This dog-friendly Suffolk beach is a charming place to unwind with a gently shelving, shingle shoreline stretching for 4 miles. End a day at the beach by sharing a bag and fish and chips with your waggy-tailed best pal, while you look out across the coast.

Dog-friendly beaches in Dunwich

Dunwich Beach

An enchanting Suffolk beach for dogs and their human companions, Dunwich Beach boasts a wildlife-rich Dunwich Heath just behind it and the area is cared for by the National Trust. This is an incredibly special landscape, and the secluded beach is set between the cliffs so it’s well protected. The town of Dunwich itself was once a thriving seaport but over the centuries parts of the town have steadily been reclaimed by the sea.

Dingle Marshes Nature Reserve

Right beside Dunwich Heath and Beach, Dingle Marshes isn’t a beach at all but does provide a stunning setting for a dog walk beside the sea. Bird watchers will love this wetland landscape which provides valuable habitat for migrating birds, while our canine pals will love sniffing out wildlife trails that crisscross this fantastic area. You can always pop over to Dunwich Beach afterwards for your hit of sand, shingle, and frothy waves.
