Created by an eccentric Scottish barrister in the last century as a private fantasy holiday village, this quirky place is well known for its unusual architecture, such as the famous House in the Clouds and the Windmill House. The village is centred around the Meare, an artificially created, shallow boating lake covering 3 acres, with islands and inlets all named by J.M. Barrie, author of Peter Pan. Emulating the swash-buckling, magical world of Neverland, visitors can hire one of the little rowing boats and glide between the fairy-tale settings.
