Why we love it: Bring the whole pack together at this large 19th-century home, which has views towards the imposing Bamburgh Castle. When you’re tired out from walking on the coast, you can indulge yourself at the Ocean Club, which has a 20-metre swimming pool, a spa and sauna and beauty treatments.

Why we love it: Close to the centre of Alnwick and only a short hop from the A1, this characterful mansion house is in an ideal location for a family gathering or a friends' reunion, and for exploring the whole of Northumberland.
