Pet-friendly holidays in Oxfordshire
Beautiful gardens, stunning architecture and plenty of open space for walks make Oxfordshire a pawfect holiday destination for you and your pooch
Landlocked and bordered by six other counties, Oxfordshire encompasses some of the best of Britain in its rural landscapes and picturesque towns. There’s lots of dog-friendly days out, so you’ll never be short of options, and there is an abundance of trails marked out, ideal for those days when walkies need to be that bit longer.
Incorporating three different Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the county is home to some awe-inspiring scenery and stunning views. The north-west of the region features part of the Cotswolds, with idyllic villages intertwined with major attractions such as Blenheim Palace and Cotswold Wildlife Park and Gardens, both of which allow dogs in certain areas. The southern part of the county includes an area of the North Wessex Downs with its luscious green pastures and rolling hills, whilst the Chiltern Hills also overlap into Oxfordshire, featuring a multitude of walking routes for you and your canine companion to enjoy together.
Famed for its university, Oxford is rich with history, and packed with architecturally stunning buildings. The ‘City of Dreaming Spires’ is full of culture and activities, whether it’s punting on the river you’re looking for, or a guided tour. Oxford is also home to many shops and restaurants to suit every taste. Other towns of interest in the area include Thame, Abingdon and Bicester, the latter of which has its own designer shopping outlet village.
There are many English Heritage sites that allow dogs around the county. You can explore the Minster Lovell Hall and Dovecote, with its striking ruins beside the River Windrush, or uncover the secrets of Wayland Smithy’s, a suspected burial site dating back thousands of years. Deddington Castle is also dog-friendly, giving your hound the chance to stretch their legs, while you immerse yourself in a historic settlement.
