In 2018, we launched a country-wide competition to find our first-ever Canine Critic. After months of determined pups applying, thousands of applications to read, and an intense public vote, we finally found our winner – Poppy!
But now we’re on the hunt for not one, but TEN top dogs to be our Canine Critics in 2019. Each Canine Critic will receive goodies, a dog-friendly holiday and the chance to proclaim themselves one of this year’s #CanineCritics. Wondering if your pup has what it takes? Here’s what our original Canine Critic got up to:
Last year, the gorgeous one-year-old cockapoo from Cheltenham fought off thousands of other wonderful entrants to earn the coveted pawsition. She then set off on paid holidays throughout the year with her owners, Cara, 27, and Andy, 29.
It wasn’t just a walk in the park, though – Poppy had to document her dog-friendly cottage holidays on both her social media channels and ours, as well as on our website, so she could share her tips with other pooches and their humans.
After paying us a visit at Canine Cottages HQ, Poppy set off on her first weekend away. She explored the charming fishing village of Appledore before travelling down the coast to Bude, where she made herself at home in Bootlace Barn, curled up on the sofa in front of the wood burner. You can read Poppy’s write-up here (her humans helped her with the typing).
Her second adventure was to the Peak District, where she discovered just how dog-friendly the area is – from stately homes to breathtaking walks, and even pubs with doggie beer!
She was so happy with her holiday cottage, which was perfectly located for exploring the Peak District and even had its own robot vacuum cleaner, Digby!
Then it was time for a winter break to the Norfolk coast. Poppy loved the miles of sandy beaches to herself, the cosy pubs with log burning fires and, of course, a lovely cottage to return to in the evening.
Poppy’s highlight was seeing the seals off Blakeney Point, where she was welcomed on board a guided boat trip. She loved being a salty sea dog, until she was caught off guard by a huge wave!
Next was to the ulti-mutt doggy paradise – the Lake District – where she got frosty paws exploring the snowy landscape. The Lake District was a firm favourite with both Poppy and her owners for its mix of walks, lakes and cosy cafes.
On the trip, Poppy discovered an incredibly dog-friendly cafe where the owner takes Polaroid pictures of all the canine customers to add to their doggy wall of fame. Poppy was awarded the coveted title of ‘dog of the day’ after her hilarious attempt at smiling for the camera!
Poppy’s final assignment was a week-long adventure in Cornwall where she sniffed out sandy beaches, quaint fishing villages and even a dog-friendly vineyard.
The cottage she stayed in had a proper Cornish cream tea laid out for her humans, and a tin of treats, bed and bowl for Poppy – you can’t get a warmer welcome!
