It's not enough nowadays for a canine to simply have a collar and lead. Oh no. Gone are the days when a dog would have just an everyday collar, a leash and perhaps an extender lead if they were lucky. Now fashionable pups compete (or colour coordinate, depending on the dog) with their humans with a whole wardrobe of matching accessories.

They may have one collar and lead set for morning walkies at the park, a smarter outfit when socialising with new pup pals and perhaps a stronger, more mud-resistant set when scaling mountainous peaks and splashing about in the water. Whatever the occasion, there's an outfit to match.

With that in mind, our friends at Oscar & Hooch have sent some of our most fashionable Canine Critics a collar and lead set to try out. Did they have other dogs fighting them off for their new collar and lead? Were they the smartest dogs on the block? Find out below!

Puggy and Pops, London Canine Critics

Puggy and Pops

What can we say about Oscar and Hooch other than how much we adore them!

As part of our Canine Critics welcome pack, Puggy and Pops were kindly sent a collar and lead each by Oscar & Hooch. But this isn’t Pops' first rodeo! We have a huge soft spot for this brand and we have collected a few Oscar & Hooch items since meeting them at a dog show in London in 2018. Handmade in Somerset by a family, who adore all dogs; I’ll never forget them cheering on Pops when she entered “best rescue” - her first dog show. (Of course, she won!)

Puggy and Pops like to complement each other, so they were thrilled when they received a collar and lead set from the daisy collection. In both purple and grey, which looks great when they mix and match! We get a lot of comments from passers-by about how smart and coordinated they look and I feel happy knowing that Puggy and Pops are safe and comfortable in the super-soft, yet mega strong fabric collars.

Pops already owns the yellow and the purple striped set and I can guarantee our collection will continue to grow, as their range of colours and prints is incredible and the attention to detail is second to none. Style meets durability here and the best thing about them is you can throw them in the washing machine and they will come out looking (and smelling) as good as new! Perfect if like Pops, your pooch has a penchant for poop rolling!

Puggy is a chunky boy and despite trying almost every brand on the market, it's rare to find a collar that fits his wide neck. This one did the trick - Puggy is comfortable and safe on walks, as well as looking mighty stylish in the process!

Bravo Oscar & Hooch, you have excelled yourselves yet again and we will always wear your items with pride!

We were generously given the Oscar & Hooch signature range collar and lead to trial this year. This style features a soft suedette material filled with a strong webbing core. The design felt durable which is particularly important for us with such a large dog. The item is really comfortable to hold and offers a good grip while you are out and about. The nickel-plated hardware makes the pieces feel luxurious and it comes with a sturdy traditional buckle for fastening.

What impressed us was that the item can also be machine washed after use and comes out sparkling clean and good as new. The colour complemented Penny very well and even matched out her Luna’s Loft bandana. A double win for us! We found this lead worked best for walking Penny in urban settings. The shorter lead length allowed us to have good control while we were walking her and helped her maintain focus.

We were so excited when our Oscar & Hooch lead and collar arrived because we had already seen great things from them online. They come in cute packaging which is always a good sign – and the contents did not disappoint! Inside, we were gifted a gorgeous graphite grey set and we love it so much that it’s our go-to for everyday use now. Both the leash and collar are handmade from soft suedette that is stitched over ultra-strong nylon webbing; so, whilst it's lovely and comfortable for Mum to hold, it’s also really strong and durable too – making it perfect for taking me on adventures.

The collar is stylishly decorated with nickel, so I feel very dapper when I’m out wearing it! Mum’s favourite thing about the lead is that it can be adjusted in length. She uses the shortest adjustment for normal walks which is ideal for heelwork, and the longest extension is great for when we go to training class!

What’s really cool about this set is that the fabric has anti-bacterial and anti-dust mite protection, as well as stain-resistant properties. These features definitely come in handy when we’re trekking through muddy woodland together and I splash in puddles! Mum doesn’t even mind me getting it dirty anymore because it can just be thrown in the washing machine with my toys – super easy!

I think that this type of leash is perfect for all dogs, no matter what their breed. It’s definitely strong enough for big dogs like me, but it’s also delicate and stylish enough for small pups too. In fact, my little Shih Tzu brothers are getting the matching blue sets for their birthdays because Mum loves the design so much. I’d definitely recommend getting your next collar/lead from Oscar & Hooch; they tick aaaall the boxes so it’s a 10/10 from us.

What does a handsome floof monster like me need? OBVIOUSLY a PAWSOME collar and lead to help me attract the ladies!

Mumma said there was high competition about who was softer - me or the collar and lead.. she has never told me the winner (fuming once again!) but fur-well, I do look fabulous. Obviously, apart from looking paws-itively handsome, hoomans said it has to be strong to be able to hold my pulling and easy to clean after I’ve rolled around in ten different puddles per walk. I am paw-leased to announce it passed with flying colours!

Hoomans overall love this set as it’s soft around my neck (the collar, not lead) as sometimes they can be a bit too harsh and not comfortable. The lead is sturdy yet soft on the hooman's hands when I’m pulling – bonus! Mumma is wondering whether it’s acceptable for me to have one in every colour, or is that too much?

Few fun facts about the collar & lead:

  • The unique antibacterial/anti-dust mite protection will last for the life of the fabric.
  • Lovingly handmade in the heart of Somerset in the finest suedette fabric.
  • Lead is available in 3 widths.
