Church Bay (Porth Swtan)

Church Bay (Porth Swtan)

An unspoilt sand and pebble beach with cliffs towering all around, this enchanting seaside spot in the north-west of the island is just the place for your pup pal to run free.

Please be aware that this lovely dog-friendly Anglesey beach is accessed via a steep path from the village (this may be tricky for old dogs and little pups!), but this just makes it even more of a treat when you reach the sweeping sands.

Lligwy Beach (Traeth Lligwy)

Walk through the dunes and down wooden steps to the wide open sands of Lligwy Beach, set on the east coast of dog-friendly Anglesey.

The dunes and grassy surrounds create a wild, remote feeling that’s very in tune with the atmosphere of this entire island, and the village of Moelfre is just 1.5 miles around the coast. This epic dog-friendly beach is a great place for your pup to have fun dashing amongst the dunes or splashing through the waves.

It really feels like you’re in the middle of nowhere on this rugged beach, yet there is a small cafe where you can grab a coffee. It’s a lovely destination for sea fishing or rock pooling. It’s best to keep your dog on the pebble shore and don’t let them swim as the currents here are very strong.

Address: Black Point, Penmon, Beaumaris, LL58 8RP

Stay nearby: On The Marina, Caernarfon | sleeps 1 dog and 4 humans

Porth Padrig (White Lady Bay)

Porth Padrig (White Lady Bay)

For a lesser-known day by the sea, take a trip to this secret Anglesey dog-friendly beach on the north coast. Myths and legends are associated with this magical seaside spot, and there are two caves on the beach – one of which is an old iron ore mine.

Towering cliffs protect this beach but it is the white quartzite sea stack that is the real landmark of this beautiful, crescent-shaped bay. It’s a mix of sand and shingle, and the Anglesey Coastal Path follows the cliffs so you could enjoy a dog walk with epic views during your trip.

When the tide is out, nearly 10 square miles of sand is revealed offering endless space for games of fetch or for playful dogs to chase each other about. The villages of Pentraeth and Benllech sit on either side of this impressive beach for when you’re ready for a bite to eat.

You and your dog will adore this wide, sandy beach. Pack a picnic and get hiking to this pretty destination during your pet-friendly holiday to Anglesey.

Amenities: There are no facilities here – the nearest pub is in Rhoscolyn around 3 miles away. The nearest parking is at Rhoscolyn Beach Car Park.

Traeth Llydan, Rhosneigr

Just around the coast from Traeth Crigyll, you’ll find another Rhosneigr beach: Traeth Llydan. The sand at this beach is slightly coarser than its neighbour, but it’s still a wonderful place to take the dog for a day by the sea.

Enjoy ball games and take a dip at this delightful beach, and while here, you could enjoy a walk around the serene and stunning Llyn Maelog, a lake that the beach backs onto.

If you decide to venture to the popular seaside town of Beaumaris, this beach is a lovely place to get a hit of fresh sea air with your canine pal. The town is best known for the magnificent Beaumaris Castle that’s well worth the trip.

After visiting this ancient castle, head along to the lovely pier, spend time popping in and out of independent cafes, then let your canine pal enjoy a refreshing paddle in the sea at Beaumaris’ small but charming beach.

It’s backed by grassy cliffs, a promenade and the large village of Benllech where you can find plenty of shops and places to eat out. Whilst the beach has summer restrictions, there are parts of the beach where dogs are welcome all year.

Cemaes Bay

Cemaes Bay

Picturesque Cemaes Bay on the north coast of Anglesey is actually made up of two dog-friendly beaches: Traeth Mawr and Traeth Bach. There’s a fantastic promenade to explore – pup pals must be kept on leads here – and there are summer restrictions on parts of the beaches too.

In the seafront village of Cemaes itself, there are plenty of pet-friendly pubs, alongside shops and cafes. While visiting Traeth Mawr, listen out for St Patrick’s Bell – a bell on legs that chimes at high tide.

Amenities: WCs, pubs, cafes and shops in the village of Cemaes

Address: Cemaes Bay, LL67 0ND

Stay nearby: Cwyrt Cottage, Anglesey | sleeps 1 dog and 6 humans

Llanddwyn (Newborough Warren)

Llanddwyn (Newborough Warren)

This excellent sandy beach on the southernmost tip of Anglesey is a lovely spot for adventurous canines and their human companions.

Beautiful Llanddwyn, a peninsula and island that juts out from one end of the beach, is home to the gleaming white lighthouse, Goleudy Tŵr Mawr, that stands out against a backdrop of the sea and Snowdonia’s mountain range. The beach and dunes are a Site of Special Scientific Interest and magical Newborough Forest is nearby too.

Address: Llanfairpwllgwyngyll, LL61 6SG

Stay nearby: Bwthyn Glanrhyd Cottage, Caernarfon | sleeps 1 dog and 4 humans

Llanddona Beach

Llanddona Beach

Whilst this coastline is popular, Llanddona Beach itself is something of a hidden gem. Two roads lead down to this dog-friendly Anglesey beach, both so steep and winding that many visitors are put off; so if you are willing to make the journey, you’ll be rewarded with a big, beautiful stretch of sand that’s quieter and more peaceful than other local beaches.

There’s a sand dune system to discover and Pentraeth Forest is nearby too. In summer, dogs are banned from the eastern half of the beach but can race about on the western side all year.

Amenities: Car park, WCs and beach cafe/kiosk

Address: Allt Bron-Philip, Beaumaris, LL58 8UN

Stay nearby: Bryn Afon, Caernarfon | sleeps 1 dog and 4 humans

Porth Dafarch

Porth Dafarch

On Holy Island, on the west coast of Anglesey, sits this charming dog-friendly beach that’s owned and managed by the National Trust. Surrounded by rocky headland outcrops, it’s a sheltered cove and a delightful spot for a peaceful family day out with your canine pal.

Sea kayaking and scuba diving are popular here, and there are cycle racks for parking your bike if you and your dog love active coastal adventures.

Amenities: Car park, WCs and slipway

Address: Unnamed Road, Holyhead, LL65 2LR

Stay nearby: Bay Point House, Trearddur Bay | sleeps 2 and 14 dogs

Trearddur Bay

Trearddur Bay

Down the coast from Porth Dafarch, Trearddur Bay is a seaside resort where you can relax by the sea and then pop into the village for eating and shopping opportunities. A long promenade stretches behind the beach, and when the tide is out, there’s plenty of space for your pup to enjoy chasing tennis balls.

This pet-friendly beach is also of historic interest as it was once an ancient burial site that has since been excavated. Summer restrictions apply on part of this beach, but there is space where your four-pawed pal is welcome all year round.

Amenities: Car park, WCs, slipway, shops and pubs

Address: Trearddur Bay, Holyhead, LL65 2UL

Traeth Mawr, Aberffraw

Traeth Mawr, Aberffraw

Traeth Mawr is a pet-friendly beach backed by dunes that stretch from the beach all the way to the lovely village of Aberffraw. Spend time breathing in the fresh sea air while your canine pal digs in the soft sand, enjoys a sea swim and makes friends with other beach-going pups.

There is free parking on roads around the village of Aberffraw but the nearest car park is 3 miles away, meaning this beach stays relatively quiet all year compared to some of Anglesey’s more popular beaches.

Amenities: Cafe in Aberffraw 1 mile from the beach, while the nearest car park is Porth Trecastell Car Park, 3 miles away
