  • A stylish and unique couple’s retreat with a wood burner

  • Enjoy long walks from your doorstep in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty

Property code: OC-2026

Escape the rat race and re-energise at this idyllic retreat for two (that’s two humans and two canine chums) on the impressive Holkham Estate. After all, it’s not every day you get to stay in a characterful one-bed lodge, sympathetically converted from a former gatehouse designed by the architect, S.S. Teulon. Relax amid the bright and airy interiors, complete with a mix of modern and antique furnishings and ‘country-life’ touches. Or sit outside in your private garden admiring the grand building, albeit on a small scale, as you enjoy a cuppa or a tipple with your canine friends snoozing at your feet.

This single-storey gatehouse offers stylish decor, luxury touches and real comfort in a truly beautiful setting. Once inside, relax in the light and airy lounge complete with a sofa, external door plus a cosy wood burner where you can let sleeping dogs lie after a long day. Old and new furniture and curios mingle for an eclectic and elegant feel. There’s a small kitchenette for basic catering and a generous shower room. Sleep soundly in the pretty, king-size bedroom. The enclosed lawned garden outside is surprisingly big and perfect for al fresco suppers and first and last shuffles for the dogs.

Take advantage of your access to the wonderful 25,000-acre parkland, lead in hand. Approaching the lodge via its long driveway you can admire the impressive attention to detail in this 1847 design. Sniff out sandy shenanigans on Holkham Beach (6 miles) where dogs are welcome all year. Combine retail therapy with sightseeing at Creake Abbey with its impressive ruins (3 miles). Otherwise, stride out with your best friends by your side to leave no ball unfetched on lovely walks around the coastline and quaint villages of the surrounding Norfolk Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

What a lovely place! We really loved our stay and we will stay in this property again, we have stayed in other lodges on the estate and we love this one, even though the garden is not joined to the property its a few metres away from the door and completely enclosed so the dogs could be safely off lead.

A simply magical property on the most beautiful estate. I walked the estate daily and falling to sleep accompanied by a lullaby of owls was unforgettable. The welcome hamper and little touches of tea, coffee and sugar were very thoughtful and the logs and fire lighters made the cottage feel so cosy in the evenings. A pokey lodge with a busy adjacent main access gate to the Southern part of the Holkham estate. Sitting room had no openable windows and the bedroom window was constantly covered in condensation and mildew. Table seating tatty and main door curtain needed attention. Kitchen had ancient belling hob and very little equipment. No dishwasher and no freRead moreezer compartment in an old fridge. Very poor value for money . Lovely place, however NOT dog friendly. Description should advise that garden is separate from cottage. Every time our dog needed to go out we had to put her on the lead. This was very disappointing to us.

We had a fabulous week staying at South Lodge East. Although small it had all we needed including a small dining table which I couldnt see in the photos. We had some wonderful walks across the Estate to the hall. It was so peaceful even though we were there at the time of the Gone Wild festival.

The cottage is clean and tidy and the lounge and bedroom are both comfortable but the kitchen is lacking. I know space is at a premium but at this price point, a cottage should have a dishwasher and washing machine also. Double glazing would help with the noise issue. A very comfortable and clean cottage in a beautiful area. Simply don't bother looking elsewhere if you want a holiday in this area of the country, pay a little extra as it really is so worth it. We looked long and hard prior to booking and certainly made the right choice.

This place is an absolute gem: the park is lovely with deer, pheasants and geese, and lots of vistas opening up. The Hall itself is also well worth visiting. The cottage itself is lovely - bed is comfortable, beautifully furnished. Also, the space outside is lovely to sit in the morning sun.

A wonderful setting for total peace and tranquility. A perfect base to explore the estate. A stunning setting however the outdoor cleanliness was poor and the outside doormat was filthy. The overflow in the bathroom sink was showing mould. So overall the cleanliness was below expectations.
