  • Explore the impressive grounds of Holkham Estate and long stretches of sandy coastline
  • An elegant and romantic retreat with roll-top bath
Property code: OC-1941

Exactly what it says on the tin, this is your chance to bring your better half and your best canine chums to stay in a converted triumphal arch on Holkham Estate. Quirky? Yes. Unusual? Certainly. But, practical and comfortable? Absolutely! This Grade I-listed 18th-century arch has been sympathetically and thoughtfully remodelled into stylish retreats. It’s a one-bed, adults-only property that offers modern conveniences and comfort alongside stunning views, a hint of grandeur and beautiful architecture. With access to the parkland, walkies pose no problem and the Norfolk Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is on your doorstep.

Step through the arched doorway into the lofty and bright kitchen/diner, with seating for four and a modern kitchen, that’s spacious and well-equipped enough for basic holiday catering. Take a deep breath before tackling the 34-step staircase winding up to the deluxe bedroom, via a middle-floor bathroom. The king-size four-poster bed has a wonderful semicircular window at its head and beyond its foot affording stunning parkland views straight along The Avenue. On one side of the room is a cosy seating area complete where you can let sleeping dogs lie, while you soak in the roll-top bath on the other side, all under a vaulted, beamed ceiling. There’s a lawned garden area for you to sit and watch your canine chums sniff about.

Holkham Estate is yours to explore; we don’t want to hound you but do be mindful of deer and other wildlife, and keep dogs on leads in the parkland and woods. Sniff out fresh crab sandwiches for lunch in the pretty village of Wells-next-the-Sea (3.5 miles) or just mooch about nearby Holkham itself. Watch four-pawed pals have a ball on dog-friendly Holkham Beach (6 miles) to top the holiday fun off.

This is a romantic and quirky holiday accommodation with a lovely main sitting room and bedroom area. It is located just outside the gates to the Holkham estate and is surrounded by fields of sheep. However, it is unsuitable for anyone with limited mobility, as the main room is 34 steps up a very narrow stone spiral staircase from the kitchen/dinRead moreing area. Bring small luggage for the same reason. Hide

An absolutely beautiful accommodation. We had the most amazing stay and were in awe of the bedroom/ living room. The kitchen was equipped with everything we needed and the welcome gifts were lovely.

Quirky and intriguing accommodation, with very comfortable bed and living area upstairs. Lovely view and well positioned on the Holkham Estate grounds for walks.

The Arch is in a wonderful position - we weren't at all bothered by traffic as others have been. We were though disappointed in the general state of the kitchen and toilets. They could all do with decorating/cleaning. We had a problem with the shower door (which a cleaner should have noticed) and couldn't use it our first day. Since dogs are welcoRead moreme, we would have expected doors on the kitchen units .......... We were also most disappointed that the 10% discount was NOT available despite being advertised on the website and for which we thought was included when we booked. So all in all not what we expected having paid 1064 for three nights. Response from holidaycottages.co.uk: Thank you for your review. We can confirm that we will discuss this with the owner Hide

The Triumphal Arch Wast is an incredible place to stay. Not only is it a beautiful building tastefully decorated, with stunning views, but its beautifully clean and has everything we could have needed.

Quirky, stunning and totally unique. Will not work for everyone given 33 step spiral staircase but we loved it

House keeping was poor in places, in particular oven, it was dirty from previous occupants, we had to clean shelfs/sides before we could use it, we felt this reslly was no acceptable and were disappointed. Response from holidaycottages.co.uk: Thank you for your review. We have spoken to the owner and the issue has now been resolved.

A really very impressive building to take in as to come up the drive. Set in beautiful parkland with a fantastic view down to a column and the sea beyond. But the properties main function was to be an entrance arch, so the accommodation was of secondary importance when it was first built. So some aspects are a compromise. Low door heights, very sRead moreteep, very narrow 32 step, stone spiral stairs. If you have a dog you will probably need to carry them both up and down these steps. The drive through the Arch is a public road, so expect normal road traffic, cyclists and dog walkers to be coming through on a regular basis, which is a bit of a let down if you were expecting privacy. The staff when called upon were superb, special thanks to Gavin for sorting out an issue Hide

A wonderful property with lots of character, very private, rural and quiet but with good access to Holkham and Wells. Lovely walks around the estate, the beach and the towns/villages. Will definitely return. Other reviews mentioned an issue with flies but there were none in the property when we visited (mid June). We loved our stay even though the stairs were quite a challenge and we are pretty fit people in our 50s. Will most likely be coming back as holkham hall and its grounds were simply stunning. P.s no signs of any ghosts.
