Two people can snuggle up on the sofas together in front of the crackling wood burner with their doggos curled up at their feet. The closest towns are Great Torrington (10 miles) with Castle Hill and Torrington Common to explore for dogs and Bideford (12 miles) which is on the Tarka Trail and has a lovely big park at its centre.

  • The beach: Dogs are allowed on part of Sidmouth Beach (28 miles) all year, but check restrictions before you go.
  • The pub: The Cadeleigh Arms in Tiverton welcomes dogs in the bar area.
  • Something to do: Just 4 miles away in Bickleigh is the Devon Railway Centre where dogs are welcome on a lead, while the Exe Valley Way passes through Tiverton (8 miles away) and is perfect for walkies.

  • The pub: Two wonderful pubs sit side-by-side down by Instow Beach: the Instow Arms and The Boathouse - take your pick!
  • Something to do: Take a stroll down the Tarka Trail, which took its name from the book by Henry Williamson. It winds its way through Devon countryside all the way to the coast and dogs will have a great time roaming this route with you – it’s a cycle route too, so watch out for bikes or better yet, hire a bicycle to travel further along this 30-mile trail.

  • The beach: The closest dog-friendly beach is Kingsand in Torpoint, 30 miles away, a nice town for a day trip but possibly a bit far if you’re on holiday – the pup won’t mind as there are miles and miles of scenic walks on Dartmoor, just 7 miles from the holiday cottage.
  • The pub: The Olde Plough Inn is a dog-friendly pub, 3 miles away, set beside the River Tavy.
  • Something to do: Dogs on leads can roam the grounds of the National Trust’s Buckland Abbey, 4 miles away, while the Tamar Trails Centre is 6 miles north and a great place to start on a range of top dog walkies.
