Perfect for celebrating special occasions with family or friends, this historic home offers plenty of space both inside and out and is ideally located for making the most of the local outdoor pursuits.

Sometimes all you need is somewhere quiet to escape to with your loved ones and dogs for an opportunity to relax, refresh and revive. Fortunately, this 8 person cottage in Castle Douglas ticks all the boxes for a perfect getaway; well-equipped and homely, rural and tranquil, yet only a stone's throw from excellent amenities. Set feet and paws a-roaming through sprawling countryside by day and warm up with a bite to eat in one of Castle Douglas' dog-friendly eateries. When you are ready to return home, there will be no better way to wind down than with a glass of wine for you and some big, tasty bones for your four-legged friends.

Whether you are reclining in the lounge with your latest read and your pups at your feet, gathering in the kitchen over a tray of amuse-bouches or sharing anecdotes over bottles of fizz and plates of hot grub in the formal dining room, this winsome family home has something for everyone. While the main house brings the relaxation, the outside games room brings the fun, complete with an open fire, seating and array of games, including billiards, darts and table tennis. Challenge your compadres to a game of table tennis before crowning the victor and retreating back to the main house. At night, blissful sleep can be sought from the comforts of one of the six bedrooms located on the first floor.

Along with the games room outside, the property also boasts a tennis court and an enclosed garden with outdoor furniture. Play games of frisbee with your hounds, challenge the group to a fun-filled tennis tournament and later branch off to explore the numerous country walks nearby. Should you feel like breaking off from country pursuits, Castle Douglas has all sorts on offer, including shops, cafes and restaurants.

From our perspective this was a very good property in an beautiful rural location. Previous reviewers had left negative comments about tired or tatty furnishings, but This was emphatically not our experience. Simply put - the description/photos of the house in no way reflected the reality. We found the house - whilst spacious & in a great location - to be faded & shabby with threadbare carpets, peeling wallpaper , upholstered furniture stained & inadequate bathroom facilities. Cleaning had been superficial with a great deal of underlying grime. This is a large and splendid old farmhouse set in beautiful countryside with great views, a large garden, tennis court and great games room. It is obviously a much loved family home and so you should not expect perfection when it comes to furnishings, furniture and equipment. House - comfortable and functional with lots of space. Games room and tennis court were great additions for all weather entertainment. Kitchen never failed on us for group eating requirements. A little dated in the decorating department - perhaps just the bedrooms could be updated? Area - very rural and quiet. 30 mins to the heart of Galloway ForesRead moret and about the same to the coast to provide great walking and cycling. Castle Douglas 10 minutes in car for shopping. Places visited - Cally at Gatehouse of Fleet, cycled the old railway from Mossdale to Big Water of Fleet viaduct and back, cream of Galloway for the kids, red kite trail, galloway activity centre for water slide and climbing and a meal at Mr Pooks were all worthwhile.
