At a glance

  • One of three comfortable holiday homes in a converted, stone-built barn
  • Situated at the foot of Blencathra with wonderful views across the valley
  • Perfect for couples, a group of friends, families and two four-pawed pals
Property code: OC-SZ433

Situated in the foothills of majestic Blencathra, this stone former barn has been transformed into three comfortable properties that are ideal for families. Explore the rugged northern reaches of the Lake District National Park, bringing along your two hounds to join in on the fun. Tall peaks, ethereal woodland and serene lakes provide a tempting natural playground for humans and hounds alike, so all you’ll need to do is remember to bring along some treats to enjoy afterwards. On your return, your accommodation has ample sleeping space for six.

Continue the fun with a BBQ feast in the shared outdoor area before retreating to your private patio for an al fresco drink at sunset. The weary pawed will soon find a cosy snoozing spot in the spacious lounge/diner while you watch TV, but at suppertime, he’ll quickly rouse himself to join you at the table. The kitchen is equipped with all the essentials for light breakfasts and hearty dinners, and at bedtime, you’ll discover the bedrooms – one on the first floor and two on the lower ground floor along with a generous bathroom.

Excellent road links close to the property lead to further exciting destinations including beautiful Keswick 5.5 miles away, a delightful market town with an excellent selection of independent shops, restaurants and cafes. Enjoy a show at the Theatre by the Lake, soak up some history at the museum, and perhaps nip to the cinema while Fido enjoys a bonus walk with the remainder of your party. Derwentwater is a short 2.5-mile drive from town and carries an impressive repertoire for water sports, especially if the idea of exploring by boat thrills you.

  • 3 bedrooms – 2 double and 1 twin

We only had a 3 night stay and the accommodation was suitable for our family of 6. The pre-arrival instructions were clear and efficient. There was a slight air of sadness about the place; the carpets are not very clean looking, the window catches are loose, some of the kitchen furniture veneer is peeling, the only games are jigsaws. All this doesnRead more't matter if the weather allows one to be out all day but for bad weather or a longer stay, you'd have to take your own entertainment. The beds are comfortable enough, bath mats would have been useful, The hot weather meant we had to choose between ventilation and traffic noise because of the proximity of the A66. The pub over the road was friendly, welcoming and the food good pub grub. All in all an enjoyable short break. Hide

These cottages are in an excellent position for our purposes and I have stayed in each of the three over many years. They were of a high standard but now it would be too charitable to class this cottage as tired. It is in need of substantial maintenance. The 'ample private parking' had no space when we arrived and the situation remained the same evRead moreery evening as it is used by pub customers. Internet would be helpful rather than trying to rely on mobile phone hotspot.Reply from holidaycottages.co.uk: Thank you for your feedback, we really appreciate it. Please be assured, all details have been passed to the homeowner to be looked into. The owner has since put up new signage in the parking area, which sends a clear message to unauthorised vehicles. Good location is good for walking/fell running but the property is in a very poor state of repair. We stayed here 12 years ago & it seems very little (if anything) has been done to the property since. The fridge is held together with tape, half of the light bulbs in the property are missing, the hot tap does not work in one bathroom, & furniture inRead more the bedroom is falling apart. The advertised DVD player was not there & parking far from ample as you have to compete with walkers and pub goers.Reply from holidaycottages.co.uk: Thank you for your feedback, we are sorry for any issues experienced. This cottage is in a great location, we walked up Blencathra from the front door. Thee is loads of space and very good food in the pub behind. Despite being so close to the main road traffic noise is minimal.
