The small city of Ripon (11.5) has lots to offer, with its majestic cathedral and floral Ripon Spa Gardens, where dogs on leads are welcome. History fans will be keen to check out the Grade-I-listed Jervaulx Abbey (3.5 miles) the ruined medieval castle at Middleham (6.5 miles).
