Pupcake recipes FAQs

Test your baking skills by cooking up one of these dog-friendly cake recipes (with UK measures) for your family pet – but first, we’ve answered a couple of foodie-related questions you may have before getting started. Click on the question to see the answer.

Chocolate is famously toxic to dogs, and so are avocados, artificial sweeteners, grapes and raisins.

When it comes to baking, bicarbonate of soda and baking powder are poisonous to dogs before they’ve been cooked, so keep these ingredients out of reach during baking – a couple of teaspoons in a cake for dogs shouldn’t cause any problems though once baked!

Avoid white flour, which is edible but doesn’t have any nutritional value for dogs – instead use wholegrain flour for a more fulfilling dish.

Dogs can be allergic to a huge range of things, just like us humans. However, egg, wheat, dairy and soy are some of the foods that our four-pawed pals are most likely to be allergic to and worth avoiding if you’re concerned.

Peanut butter is a favourite ingredient for pup cakes as it’s sticky and sweet, cooks well, and is great for holding together other ingredients in a no-bake dog cake.

Other fun ingredients many of our canine friends enjoy include bananas, strawberries, sweet potatoes, and yoghurt. Yum! Scroll on for some nut-free dog birthday cake recipes too.

Mashed potato and grated carrot make a delicious (and pretty!) dog-safe frosting for a meaty dog cake.

It’s tasty and nutritional, and is a dog birthday cake recipe without peanut butter, making it ideal for any pets with a nut allergy.

Please check each listing on the Barking Bakery's website.

Tasty carrot and peanut butter cake

A plate of pupcakes topped with peanut butter is offered to a dog who is blurred in the background.

A recipe from Hearing Dogs for Deaf People, this delicious-sounding celebration pupcake incorporates honey, carrots, peanut butter and apple among other ingredients.

Whip it up, pop it in the oven, leave it to cool and then serve up a slice to your lucky pup. When baking pupcakes with peanut butter, be sure to only use 100% peanut butter, as artificial sweeteners such as Xylitol and Aspartame are toxic to dogs.

Battersea dog birthday cake

A dog wearing a party hat sits in a chair, about to take a bite out of a round dog cake, with bone-shaped snacks around the edge.

Incorporating banana and coconut into their recipe, Battersea’s dog birthday cake recipe even includes a video you can cook along with while baking for your pet.

They don’t skimp on cake icing either, suggesting you substitute the human version of buttercream with the far more dog-friendly mashed potato, and sprinkle your cake with dog treats for the finishing touch.

Peanut butter and banana frozen pupcakes

Another great no-bake dog cake, these peanut butter and banana frozen pupcakes are the perfect size for an individual dog birthday cake – sorry humans, no sharing this time!

It’s a refreshing choice for any dog with a summer birthday, as your pup can keep cool while tucking into a tasty treat. And what's more, this is a super-simple dog cake recipe, perfect for when you don't have much time to prepare.

Peach and mango dog birthday cake

A dog looks on as human's hands mix up cake mixture in a bowl.

Pupcakes are a real treat for your pup, and are the perfect food to serve up on their birthday. If your family pet has a peanut allergy, it can be tricky finding a nut-free dog cake recipe, but don't worry – The Barking Bakery’s recipe at the top of the page and this peach and mango cake are both dog birthday cake recipes without peanut butter!

The latter is a yummy nut-free dog cake, bursting with a selection of fruity ingredients, making it a relatively healthy dog birthday cake recipe boasting a mix of nutritional goodness for your waggy-tailed canine.

Meaty cake-less dog steak cake

A dog looks hungrily at a meaty dog cake being held out on a small plate.

Finally, a pupcake recipe for dogs who’d rather skip the fancy stuff and just tuck into some juicy steak! It’s essentially a meat birthday cake for dogs: two layers of meaty goodness with mashed potato and grated carrot as the frosting holding it all together.

Ideal if you’re not entirely sure which birthday cakes dogs can eat, as most canines have no problem devouring any meat. We reckon few dogs would turn their noses up at this feast.
