Sleeping up to 14 guests, this grand 16th-century property is the perfect country bolthole for large family get-togethers or reunions with friends. Of course, no getaway is complete without your furry friends coming too, so bring Fido and Mutley to explore the picturesque Lake District, with incredible walks from the doorstep. During your stay, make use of the private lake frontage owned by the nearby estate, exclusive to guests, and enjoy easy access to the many areas of the shoreline open to the public.

The picture-perfect property offers plenty of space for the whole party to relax and dine together as well as to enjoy a little peace and tranquillity away from everyone. Unwind in the sitting room, which features original sash windows and wooden floorboards, with cosy rugs, a wood burner and an open fire turning it into a cosy haven. From here, step down into the grand dining room, where a long rustic table sets the scene for large group dinners, prepared in the spacious kitchen across the lobby. On warmer evenings, why not dine alfresco in the sunny garden and enjoy the fresh air and Coniston mountain range views as the dogs go mutts for the open space. After all the excitement, retire to the first floor where all seven bedrooms are located, including a beautiful double bedroom that boasts a stylish alcove and magnificent copper bath - perfect for soothing any aching limbs after a day of exploring.

Explore the nearby Grizedale Forest (6 miles) with its plentiful woodland trails for walking, cycling, and a game or two of fetch. Two of the area’s most iconic spots - The Old Man at Coniston and Coniston Water - lie within easy reach (2.5 miles and 2 miles respectively), with the latter boasting water sports that will keep any thrill-seeker entertained.

We had a lovely time, the kitchen was lovely to cook in as it was well equipped, the dining room size was perfect and catered for our group of 11 comfortably. The whole of the cottage was lovely and clean and would like to revisit in the summer time.

We've had a wonderful stay at Townson Ground House over New Year. Perfect home for a group of friends and family to get together with lots of space for everyone and well equipped. The house is approximately a 20 minute walk from the nearest pub and about 30 minutes walk into Coniston village which is a lovely walk around the lake. Comfortable cottage in great location for exploring local areas. Plenty of parking. Peaceful location. Kitchen very well equipped. Good walks from doorstep. Good for larger groups. Numerous en-suite rooms certainly a bonus. Cottage would benefit from some updating especially the lounge .

The cottage is quirky with multiple stairs and doorways to navigate. Was great for our extended family celebration. The log burner in the living area really made a difference on what was a rainy October weekend. Facilities were sufficient for 13 of us, 12 adults and a baby and a dog! Beautiful house in a beautiful location. Bedrooms were comfortable, plenty of space to sit inside and out. A building with lots of character - You could almost imagine Mr Darcey and Elizabeth Bennett sitting in the lounge! Very clean, well equipped and spacious. Lots of rooms and stairs to keep children entertained.

This cottage is beautiful and so special. We enjoyed a lovely weekend for my husbands 40th birthday with a group of 8 adults, 6 children.The house was plenty big enough for all of us and we weren't on top of each other, I loved that all adults had their own en suites. The house was great, we loved the quirky old fashioned but well equipped feel to it. It had enough space for us all, the location was a dream- we didnt drive any where. Would love to return in the summer.

A quirky, intriguing ex-hotel house with good facilities (including endless hot water and an excellent dishwasher!), situated in a beautiful part of the Lake District. Lovely old house in a very quiet secluded location. A mile walk into Coniston. Be prepared for quirky and you will enjoy your stay. Take essentials when you arrive as there will be no welcome pack. Research the area before arrival as there is no information on local walks etc. Wifi is available but hit and miss in the house. Home was perfect in every way thank you, we were 6 couples on a walking weekend and the house accommodated us all perfectly and is lovely an homey and very quirky especially the upstairs. We had a lovely holiday especially as the sun shone everyday and we were able to get out to walk, cycle and canoe everyday. The house is rather dark except for the kitchen where people tended to congregate. There are many different levels and steps to contend with which might not suit everyone. This was an ideal environment for our family of ourselves, three children will spouses, and seven grandchildren aged 17 years down to 8 months. The cottage was comfortable and well equipped, and a lovely quiet location in easy reach of Coniston village.

Bedrooms traditional and nice and comfortable. Lounge a little cramped when everyone in it. Lots of steps, changes in levels and low ceilings didn't suite everyone in our group. Great setting being close to the lake and walkable distance into Coniston village.

The house is beautifully situated and spacious. The private jetty access to the lake is also a real positive. Townson Ground is a lovely period property with elegant furnishings and very comfy beds. The jetty is a little walk away but worth it as the views are spectacular and there are picnic tables there too. There are two staircases which are fairly narrow and a few changes of level so maybe not suitable for some.
