An attractive cottage for couples and small families to enjoy exploring the Galloway countryside.

Set on the banks of the River Bladnoch at the gateway to the Galloway Forest Park, this cosy semi-detached cottage is perfect for families with canine companions, and eager anglers who can enjoy a 10-mile beat of privately-owned salmon and trout fishing by arrangement. Larger groups can book the two additional cottages on-site and there’s a pub and shop a short drive away (3.5 miles).

Step inside this traditional cottage with its cheery colours and cosy comforts for its guests. Everything is on one level and there’s a large garden with gates, great for hounds. Step inside the back door which leads through to the well-equipped kitchen and dining room. Unwind with your best friend in the inviting lounge by the open fire (fuel supplied) where you can sink into squishy sofas (if Lucky hasn’t beaten you to it), and unwind with games, books and a TV/DVD with Freeview. As the night draws in you’ll find two bedrooms, a family bathroom, and travel cot for babies.

Try your hand at fishing, horseriding and shooting. With private access to fishing on three local rivers (by arrangement, fees apply), you’ll want to spend your afternoons on the riverbank catching salmon. Wildlife enthusiasts, including your best friend, can also go bird watching and stargazing at the Galloway Forest Park (10 miles). Or humans can get their thrills on the 7Stanes mountain bike trails, including trails at Kirroughtree Forest (9.5 miles). Get stuck into a good read in Wigtown, Scotland’s famous book town (5 miles) or savour a wee dram at the Bladnoch Distillery (5 miles).

Dogs are charged at £20 each per full or part week.

The rolling fields and hills surrounding the steading make it a haven for nature lovers; walkers and cyclists will find plenty of trails nearby, as well as excellent areas for spotting wildlife. A range of stunning views from burns to rivers to woodlands to mountains are not too far away, and neither are the captivating villages with their excellent amenities.

Visit the Galloway Red Kite Trail and local feeding station at Castle Douglas (12 miles) to get up close to these magnificent rare birds, while the Red Deer Range, adjacent to Galloway's Wild Goat Park offers more arresting mountain views and stunning wildlife. Nearby (18 miles from the cottage) is the breathtaking scenery of Doach Wood with its towering trees reaching up to 130 feet. And of course there is Loch Ken, where rowing, sailing, mountain biking, climbing, zip wiring, and lots more will make for an exhilarating getaway.

While a local grocery shop is 3 miles away at Balmaclellan, if you should decide to sample civilization on your break, New Galloway (5 miles) features the Catstrand, an Arts centre, cinema and live music venue. You can sample local produce in its range of restaurants and lovely tearooms, or stock up at its shops and post office. Castle Douglas (15 miles) offers supermarkets, restaurants and gift shops.

Beautiful tranquil location. The cottage was clean and well equipped. The garden was lovely and secure for our 3 dogs. Hosts friendly and helpful. Each evening we walked up the driveway and never tired of the view of the Galloway hills beyond Lock Ken. We stood listening to the nearby brook and the wind - no traffic noise!! Overhead red kites soareRead mored and on the ground were wildflowers everywhere. If you enjoy nature, walking and feeling the breeze on your face then this is a perfect spot. Hide

Lovely cottage. Well equipped with a lovely enclosed garden for the dog. Exceptionally clean The cottage is a bit remote but if you don't mind driving lots of lovely places to visit. About 3 and a half miles to the nearest small village with a small shop. It's very well stocked. Sue left us some welcome groceries which was lovely. The roads near thRead moree cottage are in quite poor condition so watch out for potholes especially if it's raining as some are quite deep. But honestly a lovely place for a nice relaxing week Hide
