A home-from-home whilst exploring local Galloway, this cosy cottage is the ideal spot for a romantic getaway or trip with friends.

Hike-loving hounds will beg to stay at this converted single-storey farm cottage in the heart of Scotland’s Glenkens and Galloway Hills. Three pups are welcome at this cosy cottage, and a second property is also available to book on-site. With a rural setting, long driveway, country lanes and an enclosed garden, it’s the ideal place for children and pup pals; the region is packed with dog-friendly trails, hilltop ambles, and abundant wildlife to see and detect, from barn owls and buzzards to handsome red squirrels.

Follow the ramp to the property entrance, where you’ll find a contemporary open-plan kitchen, dining, and utility area with enviable countryside views. Traditional country style blends seamlessly with contemporary creature comforts for a relaxing holiday. The spacious living room has a double sofabed, plus a TV with Freeview, and French doors lead out to the enclosed garden - perfect for pup pals who want the best of both worlds. Sleep comes easy with the bright double bedroom, family bathroom, and quiet surroundings. There’s a village shop nearby (4 miles), plus delicious pub food a short drive away (7.5 miles).

At the gateway to Galloway Forest Park, this area is made for waggy-tailed adventures and stargazing dreams. Enjoy Europe’s longest zip wire ride at Laggan Outdoor Adventures (15 miles); stay aboard at Loch Ken Waterski School (5 miles) which also offers canoeing and fishing activities; or try the 7Stanes mountain bike trails challenge (19 miles). Boxer and Lola might prefer to explore the secluded glades and woodland trails in this peaceful area. Foodies will enjoy Castle Douglas (15 miles), Scotland’s Food Town; or visit New Galloway (5.5 miles) for its vibrant arts centre and cultural events.

The area surrounding the cottage is a haven for nature lovers with wildlife walks through The Glenkens and the Galloway Hills offering opportunities to see red squirrels, otters and even the occasional golden eagle. The Ken-Dee Marsh (16 miles) is a RSPB reserve where white-fronted geese and black-headed gulls make their homes. Keep your eyes peeled for the red kites swooping overhead.

With over 7000 stars visible to the naked eye, the Galloway Forest Park is home to the UK's first Dark Sky Park, one of only four in the world and a special place to spend an evening. Overlooking the heart of the forest, Clatteringshaws (11 miles) offers some of the best viewing in the area. During the daytime, visit the Red Deer Range (15 miles) in the forest, where over 60 red deer live. Observe these magnificent creatures from the viewing hides and discover more about them from the knowledgeable forest rangers.

The 18th-century market town of Castle Douglas (15 miles) has been designated a ‘Food Town' where over 50 local businesses produce or sell quality food and drink, so this is the place to stock up on supplies for your stay. Take a tour of the town's acclaimed microbrewery and sample some of the craft ales produced by Sulworth Brewery. Enjoy dinner for two in one of the town's welcoming pubs and restaurants showcasing local ingredients.

Nice basic cottage with a large enclosed garden great for the dogs. Nice quiet location near to Galloway Forest Park with lots of exceptional forest trail walks for the dogs. Owners live next door and were welcoming and had provided bread and milk for our arrival. Could have been slightly more comfy with better sofa/chairs and bed but on the whole Read morea good basic cottage. No shop or pub for a few miles though so be sure to pack plenty of goodies! Hide

We had a lovely relaxing time at the cottage - the location at the edge of dark sky park was great - youre also on the red kite trail and very near to the forest raiders road. Theres a wee shop in Balmclellan if you need anything and New Galloway is just down the road too. We had lots of lovely walks and enjoyed the peace and quiet at the cottage.
