This stone-built period cottage on the banks of the Afon Tanat in the quiet Welsh countryside is the perfect family retreat for two legs and four. Surrounded by steep hills, forests and waterfalls this is an excellent base from which to explore the Berwyn Mountains on foot or by bike, or set tails wagging by heading into the Tanat Valley or further afield to Snowdonia.
Located next to the village church, this cottage has been lovingly renovated, retaining the period character of its original oak beams. The living room, with its inglenook fireplace and log burner is the perfect place to curl up after a day of walking, running and chasing sticks, while a separate snug with TV, DVD and games console will keep younger guests occupied until lights out. At the heart of the property is a combined kitchen/diner, which lets you cook and dine together, or you might prefer to use the BBQ on your own private patio, which you will find in a beautiful mature walled garden. At the end of the day, weary heads will find two characterful bedrooms upstairs, both with exposed beams; one king-size with a balcony overlooking the Tanat Valley and open fields, and the other a spacious twin room.
Set in the small village of Penybontfawr, fantastic trails are on your doorstep, with a choice of riverside rambles or more energetic hill walks. The magnificent Pistyll Rhaeadr waterfall lies 6.5 miles to the north, while Lake Vyrnwy is the same distance to the south-west. Further afield, the edge of Snowdonia National Park is reached 20 miles to the west. Alternatively, for a more urban adventure, the historic town of Welshpool is 18 miles south-east, where you can sniff out a bargain at the vibrant indoor market.
