Less than a mile from the shores of Windermere, this beautiful stone cottage makes a fantastic retreat for a family or friends looking for a quiet spot to relax in the Lake District. This stylish property offers ample accommodation for seven guests – and has plenty of space for three dogs to roam too. Set within beautiful surroundings on the outskirts of a picturesque village, this idyllic retreat is ideal for exploring this magical area.

The cottage has a lovely cosy lounge with an open fire, TV/DVD, Hi-Fi and comfortable sofas, making it a wonderful space to unwind in at the end of a fantastic day. The light and elegant kitchen/diner is fully equipped with everything you may need to cook your favourite family meals. The large dining table is perfect for sitting down and sharing a snack or a celebratory dinner. The ground floor also features the first of the cottage’s four bright and restful bedrooms – a charming double. The remaining first-floor bedrooms comprise a delightful single room, a twin room with en-suite shower room, and a spacious king-size room with sofa, dressing table, TV and en-suite bathroom. The enclosed garden offers splendid views over Windermere and has a patio area ideal for enjoying a meal alfresco or a glass of wine in the evening. Beyond is the large lawn; perfect for dogs to play.

This is a fabulous area for dogs and their owners with miles of blissful walks to enjoy with splendid views. Nearby attractions include Hill Top – the former home of Beatrix Potter, and the Claife Viewing Station (both 1 mile) which affords a stunning view over Windermere. Dogs are welcome to join you on the ferry across the lake and on the local steam railways. You can also explore the beautiful Grizedale Forest (5.5 miles) and the breathtaking Esthwaite Water (2 miles).

Overall the cottage is very nice, but even in winter the AGA output rendered the kitchen dining area very hot to the point of discomfort. A general upgrade of downstairs carpets would be beneficial

Having read previous reviews, I assumed that the problems relating to cleanliness would be addressed, as holidaycottages.co.uk were still advertising it as a 4 star holiday cottage and charging accordingly. I could not have been more wrong. The cottage was filthy! The bathrooms were disgusting. The mattress covers were stained, the beds were so uncRead moreomfortable and need replacing. We've stayed at Sawrey Stables several times over the last 20 years or more and love it. The location is perfect and the cottage is cosy and homely. The furnishings and fittings are comfortable rather than modern and may seem dated to some (but very clean). Also the Jacuzzi bath no longer seems to work to our daughter's dismay. THIS IS NOT 4 STAR!! The extortionate cost for our weeks stay implied total luxury, but it really was not! The smell of oil is overpowering throughout, the Aga is permanently hot so all windows etc need to be open. The public footpath beside the cottage is well-used and the gate is noisy, so our dogs were constantly disturbed and the garden is STILRead moreL not dog-proofed. Gorgeous cottage, definitely not dog proof but brought an extendable lead with ground stake so my small dachshund wouldnt run off. Like the past comments of stains on furniture and carpets just need sorting and cleaned. If the property owners cleaned the stains, properly enclosed the garden as advertised I would book again. Firstly this was a lovely property in a great location. However the garden is not secure and we spent the first couple of hours trying to block holes our dogs could have escaped through. Even so we had to keep them on leads to prevent escape which spoilt to break. Furnishings are ok but not great for a property of this price but the cleaning reallyRead more needs some attention. Amazing location, a deer came when we were sat in the garden. Sadly the owners need to spend some money on it to make it 4*, kitchen, bathrooms and sofas really tired and stained.

This is our second visit to this property and we love it. The large enclosed garden is ideal for the dog and lovely to relax in. The dining area is perfect for family meals and board games and the lounge is cosy and comfortable. The bedrooms are all comfortable with plenty of storage space for clothes. Fabulous week away in a perfect location. Stunning views. Comfortable, clean and well equipped accommodation. Very comfortable beds. Some TLC required, especially the bathrooms. Garden lovely, although not secure for dogs, not a problem for us but could be for others. A BBQ would be a nice addition to the outside space. Would definitely come back.

We love this cosy, practical house! Spacious enough for 6 adults and well equipped with cooking equipment. The position is excellent for both lakeside walking out from the house and going farther afield via the car ferry.

We had issues with the cleanliness of the property. Holiday Cottages were good though and they sent someone out straight away to address our concerns. The photos make it look nicer than it is now, the whole place is tired and in need of maintenance. Oh and as others have said this garden is NOT secure for dogs. The location however is amazing. Surrounding gardens and area locations excellent but the house is very tiered, needs complete refit downstairs ,carpets and furniture stained ,curtains and lamps shades very shabby,not enough kitchen utensils and diner plates very small,fridge & freezer extremely small. We had a wonderful stay, thank you. There are stunning walks from the back door which made for a brilliant week. We embraced wild swimming and lots of walking and took a great trip to Cartmel and the beautiful Heft restaurant. Perhaps, add some more equipment / casserole dishes with lids for the Aga. This is a lovely house in a great location and has most things you will need. A couple of points to note.. it is dog friendly but if you have a dog that likes to jump walls then be careful in the garden as the wall on the right is extremely low and drops onto a public foot path.. ours didn't but we came close to watching her go over. Beautiful location in a stunning area. We were a party of four with three dogs (parents and adult son with girlfriend). We loved cooking on the AGA! The cottage is spaceous as the lawn and garden is. We simply loved the stay there and enjoyed the week. Absolutely recommended for a family or friends to stay together.

A lovely spot: out of the way and quiet and yet within 5 mins walk of a v pleasant pub! Great for low level lakeside walks and higher peaks all v accessible. Cottage comfortable, warm and a relaxed environment - we have already rebooked!
