Set alone amongst epic scenery, this charming 18th-century cottage is the ultimate retreat. Single-storey, the living and sleeping areas are found all on one floor and infuse traditional themes with contemporary inflections. To start your day, the well-equipped kitchen provides plenty of space. Admire the country views as you pour a cup of steaming tea and feed your pup some tasty biscuits. When you are ready to start your breaky, sit down at the kitchen’s dining table and chairs and dig in. In winter months, the gorgeous lounge is a real draw. Decorated in rich tones and enjoying a multi-fuel stove at its centre, you can sink into one of the sofas and snuggle up. As daylight begins to fade and the evening darkness steals the views, turn on the TV and find your favourite channel. For bedtimes, the cottage has a comfortable king-size bedroom. There is also a bathroom with shower over bath. In the summer, you will want to spend as much time as possible outside. Making life a little easier with your four-pawed friend, there is an enclosed front and rear garden (complete with seating and a BBQ).

Home to boundless paths to weave, the surrounding Stinchar Valley holds more than its fair share of allure. But, if you would like to explore further afield, the seaside town of Ballantrae (7 miles) is worth a visit, as is Cairnryan (18 miles).

Ballantrae (7 miles) has a small supermarket and a choice of bars and restaurants. Step onto the Ayrshire Coastal Path for a day spent walking the spectacular coastline or stroll up to the ruined Ardstinchar Castle for stunning views along the estuary. Enjoy a shoreline stroll along the 2-miles of sandy beach at Ballantrae or head out of the village to discover the cannibals' cave at the rugged Sawney Bean's Beach (5 miles).

Spot seals and porpoises as you journey across the waves to the island. Visit the Stumpy Tower, originally the town jail and now home to 4 floors of exhibits and artwork.

Take the time to explore the Galloway Forest Park (20 miles) for woodland walks, challenging mountain bike trails and lochside meanders.
