At a glance

  • Secluded and peaceful location with use of a shepherds hut in the surrounding orchard, there is an abundance of charm and character with an open fire and wood burner
  • Perfect base for walking and cycling with scenic routes through the Dorset Downs
  • Ideally placed for touring Dorset and Somerset, visit the beautiful beaches at Lyme Regis and Charmouth or spend an afternoon exploring historic Sherborne Abbey
Property code: 50290

Set beneath the picturesque Dorset Downs down a quiet lane, this charming country cottage is an excellent base for families or groups and up to two of their canine companions. Keen walkers, cyclists, and their stick-loving friends will love exploring the many scenic routes that run directly from the property, so make sure you pack your walking boots!

After a day of exploring, rest your aching feet and paws beside the open fire in the cosy lounge, cup of tea (or perhaps glass of wine) in-hand. Spend the evening enjoying a relaxed family meal in the open-plan kitchen/diner, as you make plans for the following day beside the warming wood burner. Cottage style stairs lead to three cosy bedrooms, while outside in the shepherd’s hut you will find another double bed and a wood burner - an ideal spot to curl up when the cool evening air draws in. On warm evenings, enjoy the large enclosed lawn that wraps around the cottage, and relax in the garden furniture as you watch the sun set.

Both Dorset and Somerset are easily explored from here, so you will never run out of places to visit and things to do. Enjoy a beach day at West Bay (21 miles) or Lyme Regis (30 miles) and breathe in a dose of fresh sea air, or browse the weekly market at nearby Sherborne (8.5 miles). Bridport (19 miles) and Yeovil (13 miles) are also close by, but why not head 5 miles south to the National Trust’s famous Cerne Giant - the ancient naked figure sculpted into the chalk hillside above Cerne Abbas.

Everything was fine and we absolutely loved the cottage, location was perfect. I think we were a bit disappointed that there beds weren't made up and there was a lack of love in the finishings....totally what was required...but no little treats or luxuries....a welcome goodie pack would have been such a treat

What a wonderful stay! We stayed at this beautiful rural cottage to get away from fireworks with our dog Charlie who settled straight away. It was the perfect break we all needed. Comfy, quirky and very warm and welcoming. A but creaky but that just added charm to the property. It had everything we needed. A real bonus for us was the unlimited suppRead morely of logs for the open fire as so many places charge for extra. You definitely need a car and there's plenty of walks, woods and beaches to explore. Hide

We had four days of pouring rain with two wet spaniels, and coming home to the cottage every night was a real pleasure. Very cosy and comfortable. Ann ensured that we were settled in and wanted for nothing. Well equipped, clean and comfortable, Jessop's Cottage is a little gem.

A very charming cottage set in a very quiet, rural location. Fairly easy access to the Dorset coast, around 40 minutes drive to Weymouth. Plenty of other things to do within easy reach but definitely need a car. If you just want peace and quiet we would recommend Jessop's Cottage 100%
