This is a gorgeous period property right on the water’s edge with beautiful estuary views. It’s in the little Devon village of Appledore, with cobbled streets, quirky shops and plenty of atmosphere. It’s the perfect place for beach-loving dogs, with lots of stunning sandy beaches close at hand, and you’ll find fabulous local walks around the estuary. If you want the perfect combination of countryside, seaside and town, this could just be it.

Inside, you’ll find a light, airy Victorian cottage that’s been thoughtfully decorated with lots of quirky touches. The open-plan living/dining space is attractive and comfortable, with a family-sized dining table, a comfortable sofa and a wood burner to keep you all warm after a day out exploring. There is a separate, well-equipped kitchen – you could spend evenings cooking and eating local fish while the dogs’ snooze. There are two bedrooms sleeping four in total, one with amazing sea views. Outside is a little courtyard garden with a dining table, perfect for sunny breakfasts and evenings under the stars.

The cottage is in the centre of Appledore, close to pubs, restaurants and shops. In the summer, there are boats over to the village of Instow on the other side of the estuary, where you’ll find a pretty sandy beach. Northam Burrows Country Park is just a mile away, reachable easily on foot from the house and perfect for seaside country walks. There are lots of amazing walks along the South West Coast Path and the Tarka Trail, while the wilds of Exmoor are around 20 miles away.

Weve stayed in Appledore several times before and this is by far our favourite cottage. Very central, beautiful decor throughout, cosy with a log burner and lovely views of the estuary. When in Appledore, we love crabbing, having a hockings ice cream, eating a pasty from Johns, watching the RNLI training exercises, going to the beaches at Instow anRead mored the boroughs. So much to do with the kids and dog (everywhere is super dog friendly!). Cant wait to visit again. 5 stars Hide

This traditional fisherman's cottage has been sympathetically modernised and is perfectly positioned on a small lane by the quayside (close to the public car park, if no on street parking is available). Close to local pubs and shops, but quiet. River view from both bedrooms and bathroom. The cottage is very close to the quay and bedrooms have a great view of the sea. Also close to local pubs so can be very noisy at closing time. Theres no parking but we did manage to park on the road very close to the cottage most days. The car park across the road is free from 6pm to 8am so if youre stuck it doesnt cost to park overnight. The staiRead morers in the cottage are steep and not suitable for those with restricted mobility. There is a very small yard, not very inviting to sit in. Hide

Great shower but bath might be a problem to some people as on a platform which makes it difficult to get in or out of.
