Looking for a holiday where you can admire breathtaking scenery by day and relax into a welcoming, comfortable setting in the evening? You’ll be barking up the right tree with this lovely Victorian property in North Yorkshire, which accommodates up to four human guests and two doggies. Nestled between two national parks – the North York Moors (9 miles) and the Yorkshire Dales (10 miles) – it positions you perfectly for long, satisfying walks that’ll soon set tails wagging.

This cottage has been beautifully refurbished, with polished wooden floors and farmhouse-style features such as a stable door and floral soft furnishings. The cosy lounge is ideal for relaxing as a family, perhaps sitting down with a book while your pet keeps warm by the wood burner. The kitchen is great for feeding the dogs and cooking delicious meals to share at the table. On warmer days, take a cooked breakfast onto the patio and enjoy this outdoor space while your pets chew contentedly on their bones.

You’ll be in the village of Sandhutton, which has a charming inn where dogs are welcome to join you in the bar. There are excellent walking and cycling trails starting from the village, or you could head to one of two Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Nidderdale or the Howardian Hills, both 11 miles away. The market towns of Thirsk (4 miles), Northallerton (8 miles) and Helmsley (17.5 miles) are all worth spending a few hours in. For a historical day out, take a trip to the walled city of York (26 miles). At Castle Howard (29 miles), dogs on leads are welcome in the grounds, and there are even free bones for your pet at the farm shop.

Dogs are charged at £20 each per full or part week.

The nearest town is the traditional, Yorkshire market town of Thirsk (4 miles), famous for being the home of the famous Yorkshire vet, James Herriott. There is plenty of historical interest to explore here as well as a range of eateries serving up local dishes and ales. Another favourite with foodies is Helmsley (18 miles), which is the only market town in the North York Moors National Park. It has a selection of award-winning pubs and restaurants as well as its own brewery. You may also want to visit the Castle and Walled Gardens whilst you’re there. The vibrant cathedral city of Ripon is only 9.5 miles away and boasts a Thursday market, numerous coffee shops, pubs, restaurants and a nice collection of independent shops to explore. The cathedral is smaller than its close neighbour, York Minster (26.5 miles), but is still an awe-inspiring sight. In addition, every night for at least 450 years the Ripon Hornblower has sounded the curfew at 9pm from all four sides of the obelisk in the market place, come rain or shine, followed by a 15-minute history of the ceremony and the city – an experience not to be missed! If you are partial to a flutter, Ripon Race Ground has around 15 meets from April to early September. Known as 'Yorkshire's Garden Racecourse' it has a distinct atmosphere harking back to a bygone era – traditional tea rooms and bandstands sit alongside the champagne bar.

This area of Yorkshire has enough historical sites to keep you busy for a week with Norton Conyers (8.5 miles), Newby Hall (12.5 miles) and Ripley Castle (17 miles). You could also visit the lovely Fountains Abbey and the gorgeous Studley Royal Water Garden (13 miles) – this World Heritage site is deservedly one of the National Trust's most visited locations. As well as the spectacular ruins of a 12th-century Cistercian abbey, the grounds are home to an Elizabethan Mansion, a medieval deer park and some of the most romantic vistas in the country.

Harrogate (20.5 miles) is an absolute must-visit if you're staying here. Encircled by its famous Stray, or 200 acres, of horseshoe-shaped grassland, the Victorian spa town of Harrogate has a bright and breezy open-air feel and is characterised by its impressive floral displays. And as you would expect of such a bustling upbeat town, Harrogate boasts over 300 bars and restaurants together with all the shops, cinemas, parks and gardens you could ever wish for.

For those who want to get out and soak up some of Yorkshire’s natural beauty, the National Trust’s unique Brimham Rocks (19 miles) are dramatic, moorland rock formations where you can walk, cycle, climb or even partake in yoga.
