Take your pup for a lovely stroll at Wilton Lodge Park (10 miles). With its tree-lined hikes and walled gardens, it’s one of the most picturesque town parks in Scotland. Dogs are also welcome everywhere at Hermitage Castle (15.5 miles), except for the roofed areas. For most of its 400-year life, this castle was the key to controlling the Scottish Middle March and it has been described as ‘the guardhouse of the bloodiest valley in Britain’.

Dogs are charged at £20 each per full or part week.

The area surrounding your rural retreat is a haven for nature lovers, with open fields and rolling hills creating the perfect habitat for a diversity of wildlife. There are walks straight from the doorstep through the surrounding countryside. Lace up your walking boots for a hike along the Teviothead Circular, a 9-mile trail along quiet country lanes, past the grave of notorious reiver Johnny Armstrong and across pretty burns.

The largest of the Border towns, Hawick (11 miles) is well worth a visit. Browse the many boutiques selling the world-famous Hawick cashmere and tweed. Visit the Borders Textile Towerhouse, a fascinating museum giving an insight into the region’s textile manufacturing history and the Hawick Museum where the town treasures are housed. In the heart of Hawick is the Borders Distillery where you can take a tour to see how their single malts and gin are produced, and of course sample a wee dram or two.

Stroll the beautiful gardens at Monteviot House (22 miles). Breathe deeply in the aromatic herb garden and the fragrant rose garden, admire the spectacular colours of the winter garden and feel relaxed in the tranquil water garden. Wander around the stunning arboretum with its towering trees and shady spots. Deep in the heart of the Ettrick Forest, Bowhill House (24.5 miles) has old masters on display and ancient tapestries adorning the walls. Explore the beautiful gardens, follow one of the waymarked trails through the stunning grounds and spot red squirrels, otters and mountain hares on your walk.

Had a fabulous break, the location is outstanding. The cabin itself is well appointed and was spotlessly clean, the covered hot tub was fabulous and being roofed was a huge bonus as we had some very wet weather. The owners were lovely and helpfully, highly recommend this lovely place.

Lovely couple, the lodge was amazing, beautiful sheltered hot tub perfect for the rainy weather, views were stunning and would definitely recommend to all.

We really enjoyed our break, the hot tub was fabulous, and we had a great view, the shelter over the hot tub was nice too as it rained during our stay. Lodge was very cozy and clean, we were left 2 homemade scones which was a nice touch. There wasn't really anywhere to walk the dog close enough to not have to get in the car, but this wasn't an issuRead moree for us. We will definitely return, but maybe not during school holidays as this made it more expensive. Overall we had a lovely time! Hide
