A world of wag-tastic walks is waiting for you and your pack when you wend your way to this Welsh delight in the heart of the Black Mountains. With incredible trails quite literally on your doorstep, and just 2.5 miles separating you from the summit of the Sugar Loaf mountain, this hillside retreat is the perfect antithesis to urban living for up to six people (four adults and two children aged 12 or under, including babes in arms), plus two pups.
The tone for this rugged rural retreat is set as soon as you turn onto the steep track leading up to the property; this track may not be suitable for low sports cars and icy weather. However, while the location suggests that only ruff-tuff adventurers need apply, this notion is quickly quashed once you are inside. Behind the tough stone walls lies a decidedly luxurious interior, with sublime views across wooded hillsides to the Black Mountains beyond. But why stay indoors when your very own south-facing terrace awaits? Creating the perfect platform from which to observe the crystal-clear night skies as the embers from the evening BBQ die down.
Beyond the mountains, 4.5 miles to the south, you will find the Welsh market town of Abergavenny, where you can stock up on Scooby snacks, and sniff around the historic castle ruins. Further afield – and across the English border – a journey 20 miles north-east puts you in the English cathedral city of Hereford where you can indulge in some serious shopping before stretching your legs along the River Wye and bounding back over the border to your hillside idyll.
