The whole pack can enjoy a rural retreat in this pretty stone cottage, where four dogs and their two humans are welcome. Adjacent to the owner’s house and set amidst 90 acres of woodland, let the four-legged ones take the lead and sniff out daily walks along the trails of the Tamar Valley. Return from your adventures to the bright and comfortable cottage, where you can hang up coats and leads, and put anything needing a refresh into the handy washing machine – perfect for damp or muddy days out.

Settle in for the evening and prepare dinner together at the kitchen counter, not forgetting a tasty treat for Fido of course. The open-plan lounge/kitchen/diner makes the space cosy and perfect for couples, plus your canine companions can keep an eye on you from their favourite cushion. Sit down to eat, and then recline on the sofa for a romantic movie night. Knowing their pack is safe and happy, your dog will be content to curl up, so when you head off to bed up the open-tread staircase they’ll continue to snooze. Unwind with a hot bath, then fall asleep undisturbed in the peaceful surroundings. Outside there’s a patio terrace for leisurely brunches and BBQs, and sun loungers are available for lazy summer afternoons. You are also most welcome to visit the owner’s gardens.

Follow the River Tavy until you reach the 16th-century, dog-friendly pub on its banks at Bere Ferrers (2 miles). There are two National Trust properties close to the cottage where you can explore the wider estate. At Buckland Abbey (4.5 miles) pick up a dog walking guide from reception to see you round the three trails, while at Cotehele (10.5 miles) there are 1,300-acres to sniff out, before a cup of tea and bowl of fresh water in the restaurant or tea-room.
