At a glance

  • One of two former 17th century Lakeland barns converted into cottages
  • Ideal couple’s retreat at the heart of the Lake District in a quiet, rural location
  • Easy access to walking routes and famous Tarn Hows and a short drive to Coniston and Ambleside
Property code: LLH09

Cosy rural cottage for two, in a tranquil location with easy access to Hawkshead and Ambleside.

Escape to this perfect little bolthole in the Lakes, for a romantic break from the real world. With stunning places to visit on your doorstep and charming original features inside, it’s just what the doctor ordered.

Converted from a 17th-century barn the cottage has a rustic country feel, from the exposed beams stretching across the open-plan living space, to the slate floor underneath. Draw the curtains and snuggle up on the comfortable corner sofa while the dogs spread out in front of the toasty wood burner. The compact kitchen has everything you’ll need to rustle up a quick dinner, with a microwave to keep things simple. Take drinks outside on warmer evenings into the enclosed garden to relax under a twinkling sky - you’ll never have seen so many stars! The utility room with washing machine and dryer is fantastic to throw in muddy dog towels and wet socks if the weather is less favourable, and upstairs there’s a cosy bedroom and adjoined bathroom, divided by a pretty screen.

The village of Hawkshead is just 1.5 miles down the lane from the house, with a good selection of shops and cafes, and it’s about the same distance to beautiful Tarn Hows for the popular 2-mile circular walk with some stunning scenery along the way. Take a trip to Ambleside, 5 miles, for a serene boat trip on Windermere (dogs are welcome too), water sports for the more adventurous, or perhaps just a browse around the town itself. Don’t forget to stop for well-deserved refreshments at one of the many dog-friendly pubs and restaurants.

Dogs are charged at £20 each per full or part week.

Very disappointing cottage! Cleanliness left a lot to be desired, very limited quantity of mismatched cutlery and crockery, lots of minor maintenance issues needing sorting (light bulbs out, cracked tiles, wobbly tables etc.), mattress needs to go in a skip! Untidy area outside cottage cluttered with overflowing bins, empty gas cylinders and old taRead moreble and chairs. Only positives were quiet location within walking distance of Hawkshead and Tarn Howes Hide

Overall a lovely tiny cottage. Very clean and reasonably well equipped. Location is excellent. Poor nights sleep as mattress is very soft and needs replacing. Easy walk to Hawshead which has pubs, shops and a co-op.

Lovely little house, if you like walking then it's about 45 min walk to Hawkshead over fields which are pathed most of the way but I wouldn't recommend a pushchair/ wheelchair.

Overall we had a great time on our holiday, the tranquility & privacy of the cottage was divine! The location was great for us to travel in all directions. Though, a warning that the pictures do not match up to what is now in the cottage. I.e. the sofa is half the size. Take your own cleaning supplies and toiletries as we were provided with a 'starRead moreter pack' but it was not sufficient between 2 for 7 days. A lot of things in and around the cottage were broken. Even so, would book & stay again. Hide

The cottage is small functional and cute. It is well kitted out but lacks attention to detail. Dirty toilet brush . Broken glasses in the cupboard and log basket that needs to be replaced. We arrived to find dog poo in the garden area and 2 bags of dog poo near the front door .We have a dog of our own but would not expect to clean up after someone Read moreelse's pet. Wonderful location, in the heart of the countryside, lots of options for long or short walks and rides from the house. And a tranquil home to return to for your stay. The cottage is located in a very nice, extremely peaceful area, no traffic noise at all and the only sounds you hear are birds, sheep and cows. The bedroom is very comfortable. It is indeed one end of a barn, and is really quite small, so if you plan to spend a lot of time there it may not be ideal, but was fantastic as a base for walking. You'll nRead moreeed to drive to reach the big walks but lower level ones are accessible from the cottage. Amazing to see the stars at night! Hide

a beautiful little cottage a couple of miles from Hawkshead (try the Queen's Head). Some things could be improved; pipes are extremely noisy, a mattress protector would seem necessary in a rental and if your car is bigger than maybe a Golf the entrance is too narrow unless you like a challenge.

This a lovely quaint cottage with the added value you can take 2 dogs its cosy and has a lovely log burner. The tv channels are basic 5 free. I took my iPad and a HDMI cable with the apple fitting and was able to put netflix through the tv, god send over christmas. Its not as close to a pub as desired and also not safe to walk when dark. Walking inRead more the lanes around in my opinion is not safe much of the ground around is fenced off, you have to keep your dog on a lead on the meadow walk near. Hide
