Surfers, seafarers and bookworms will be drawn to this terraced cottage in Appledore. Set at the estuary of two rivers, there’s a creative vibe too with narrow lanes, cobbled streets, artisan shops and galleries to potter on lazy afternoons. Sleeping six guests and two hounds, the property is ideal for families with older children and pups who love the outdoors. There’s roadside parking nearby, though guests will be thrilled to find pubs, shops, eateries, and a museum within walking distance.
Step up to the property entrance where calming coastal hues and pops of cheery colour bring a welcoming feel. There’s a dining room, lounge and well-equipped kitchen on the ground floor, cottage style stairs up to two bedrooms on the first floor (and steps down to a family bathroom); a staircase up to the attic bedroom has a seated area for mindful moments. It’s unlikely that Sally and Scamp will let you finish that favourite book so mind your head on the eaves when you rise to join them. Another pup favourite is the lounge with a coal effect gas fire, Smart TV with Netflix, books and games. Outside, there’s a private enclosed courtyard with a shower, perfect for sandy surfers and salty dogs. A set of steps leads from here to a gravelled BBQ area for al fresco evenings.
There’s a park close to the property with a dog area for lively pups, or head down to Appledore quay and catch the dog-friendly ferry to Instow (5 miles), where there are long pup-friendly beaches to roam, sand dunes to sniff at, and a walking/cycling path which also welcomes curious canines throughout the year. Further afield, find floral beauty at RHS Rosemoor (11 miles). Or visit the fishing village of Clovelly (13.5 miles), packed with coastal charm.
