Property code: OC-W301

This charming cottage boasts a peaceful, woodland setting and is just 2 miles from Whitby. The property sleeps three guests, and either one large or two small hounds, making it a great couples’ retreat or base for a small family. Enjoy woodland walks from your front door, or head to the coast to discover clifftop paths and woof-welcoming beaches. After a busy day, return to your cosy cottage to light the wood burner and snuggle on the sofa.

The elevated cottage is reached via a set of shallow steps, followed by a wooden staircase. Once inside, discover a bright, open-plan lounge/kitchen/diner. This space is full of creature comforts and accessories to make you feel at home and has wooden floors throughout (ideal for dealing with muddy pawprints). Sink into the sumptuous sofa to watch the TV/DVD or curl up in the armchair with a book. On chilly evenings, fire up the wood burner to create a snuggly spot for the woofers. Rustle up delicious dinners in the kitchen area to share together around the dining table. Two tastefully decorated bedrooms – a double and a single – await upstairs, along with a shower room. Outside, there is an enclosed decked area, where Rover and Fido can potter around, and you can sip a glass of wine and watch the local wildlife.

Follow the woodland path into Whitby, where you’ll find a vibrant seaside town, with plenty to see and do. The town has a fantastic selection of eateries, many serving fresh seafood, and stunning walks to enjoy with the hounds. Climb the iconic 199 steps to St Mary’s Church for breathtaking views, followed by a wander around the abbey ruins and a jaunt along the Cleveland Way. Just below the abbey is the beautiful Tate Hill Beach, which welcomes waggy-tailed visitors all year.

Very well equipped charming cottage, fabulous location, friendly pub with good food and a warm welcome 0.4 mile away, while Whitby is in easy 30 min walk along the cinder track. Cottage had everything we needed. The squirrels on the veranda in a morning kept us entertained.

We found the cottage to be warm, clean, comfortable and practical. It is well positioned for exploring the area and we particularly enjoyed sitting on the decking, watching the birds on the feeders, as it felt like we were in the tree tops. Was a lovely stay at the cottage. Location is perfect in terms of access to Whitby and Cinder Track whilst also being completely isolated. Being woken up by the sounds of the woodland and seeing the animals coming to eat on the deck is a great way to start the day.

Squirrels Acres is ideally positioned to escape the bustle of Whitby itself, but its a pleasant walk along the nearby Cinder Track into Whitby (or a short drive). The cottage is comfortable and quiet, and sitting out on the balcony, the only sounds are birdsong and the occasional toot of a North Yorkshire Railway steam engine chugging out of the sRead moretation; far enough away to be unintrusive. The Google Maps location of Squirrels Acres is inaccurate, as is the different location shown on the Holiday Cottages website. Also the instructions say that a bench can be seen just inside the driveway. However, the bench is no longer there. Fortunately, the owner sent me a message giving accurate instructions to find the cottage. The road is closed (and has been for some time), with access only from one end (again the owner makes this clear). The advantage is that there is no traffic noise; its a really peaceful location. Perfect location for exploring Whitby and surrounding areas. We struggled a little bit for only having the decking area as a secure area for the dog. This was our fault though as we made the booking. We thought potentially we may have some of the grass area below too but this wasn't the case. Couldn't really fault the cottage though. When previous Read morepeople ga e reviewed about the size of it, yes it is on the small size but it is perfectly fine for 3 people. Hide

Lovely cottage in a beautiful setting, all needs were thought of even down to food for the abundant wildlife. The cottage was clean, cosy and homely, especially loved the wood burner. Our host was friendly and helpful and had provided lots of information about the surrounding area, with maps and booklets to look through. Some essential provisions wRead moreere there ready for our arrival, meaning we didn't need to go straight to the shops and could settle in and relax in the beautiful woodland setting. There is room to park your car at the property off the quiet country road. There are steps to access the cottage as it is set into the hillside so not suitable for persons unable to climb them. As most of the area is hilly with steps and inclines to access Whitby, Robin Hoods Bay etc it is to be expected. My mum is a fit 85 Yr old and managed with no problems, great for building up your calf muscles and burning off cream teas. I would highly recommend staying at Squirrels Acres, it is in a beautiful quiet setting, surrounded by wildlife and an excellent base from which to explore the area. Hide

Lovely location, provided welcome drinks in fridge, well equipped and local information. Husband could feel springs in single bed so did not sleep well all week. Decking and steps a little unsafe in Winter. Plenty of heat source choices. Plenty of squirrels and birds to view from lounge. A nice property but really for couples as small :)
