  • The perfect retreat for couples who want to spend colder evenings curled up in front of a wood burner

Property code: OC-MEB

This romantic couple’s retreat features a vast living area and panoramic, private balcony views of the surrounding countryside. Fido will love walks from the doorstep to the nearby river and woods, and the enclosed south-facing patio is ideal for shared down-time.

Flooded with light, this former barn – now divided into two properties – offers every creature comfort for a couple and their canine plus-one. On the ground floor a sitting room, dining room and kitchen all flow into one another effortlessly, with a wood burner adding a warm glow to cosy evening get-togethers. All the convenience of home is here, including a ground floor cloakroom, while on the first floor there’s a master suite with king-size bed, seating area, en-suite shower room, and a balcony. Sit out here and you’ll have far-reaching countryside views; alternatively, step from the ground floor living space onto a glass-protected south-facing patio where you’ll look across the gorgeous shared grounds and may even catch sight of the fallow deer that roam close by.

The Marshland Estate has private grounds peppered with ancient trees and backing onto Captain’s Wood, a reserve teeming with wildlife. The countryside here is a nature lover’s paradise and offers an extensive network of walks, while the atmospheric River Alde is just a mile away along a bridleway. Head to the former maltings at Snape (3.5 miles), where a famous arts centre is at the centre of a complex of shops and eateries to satisfy every appetite. The 6-mile Sailor’s Path follows the river from here to Aldeburgh (9 miles) where you can buy freshly caught fish and browse a trendy selection of independent stores. Two miles from home, pretty Orford is this site of a 12th-century castle keep, ancient quay and Orford Ness, an area of historic and environmental fascination. There’s more history to discover 10 miles inland: dogs are allowed on estate walks at the famous Sutton Hoo Anglo-Saxon burial ground.

Fantastic stay in a clean and very comfortable house. Didn't use the woodburner as the heating was very efficient. Plenty if room for our two boxers downstairs. Would highly recommend a stay here. Great location for exploring the villages and coastline of Suffolk.

Comfortable and warm property, very well equipped and with wonderful views and walks. Great restaurants and cafes in the area, particularly the Unruly Pig which we both enjoyed very much. We stayed for Christmas and would very much like to return in the summer if we can manage it. Wonderful

The cottage was just what we were looking for, it was set way back from the road by a long driveway, it was nice and quiet due to its remote location and totally buried in nature, but also only a five minutes drive from local attractions and 15 minutes from groceries, etc. Ideally located for Snape Maltings, Aldeburgh and Orford, and a short drive Read moreaway from The Unruly Pig for that special occasion and Southwold for shopping and food. The location of this property is lovely. Its incredibly peaceful but within easy driving distance of all the local sights and with plenty of great places to eat nearby. The hosts were extremely accommodating in a specific request we had prior to arrival but sadly everything else left us feeling a little disappointed. We felt the whole place neeRead moreded a bit of TLC. Whilst it may have had an 4* rating up until 2020, lots of things now look a bit tired and dated. The timber flooring throughout downstairs needs a thorough clean and there are several broken items such as downlights, bifold door, upstairs velux blind and downstairs loo seat which really all need repairing. Its all these small things combined that resulted in our feeling somewhat disheartened by our choice of property. Hide

Marshland Barn is in a lovely location away from tourist hotspots. It is commodious and comfortable for two people and well equiped. It has wonderful walks on it's doorstep and if these prove restictive a short car journey open's up a wealth of opportunities. Alexia and Nick are welcoming and courteous hosts.
