This former farm building has been converted into a beautiful couple’s bolthole. Snuggle up by the wood burner, sip sundowners as you gaze across the garden to the unspoilt River Alde, and enjoy walks and birdwatching from your doorstep – two four-pawed pals can join you too!
Part of a former barn, this romantic retreat is among a small riverside collection of holiday homes. Exposed brickwork and striking timbers hint at the building’s heritage, a contrast to the contemporary, open-plan layout inside that offers all the essentials for an effortless stay. Light wood floors, smart sofas and a wood burner that supplements the underfloor heating set the scene for precious together-time in the lounge area, while the light, bright kitchen area close by has all the chef’s essentials. Dine in style at your table for two, then ready yourselves for bed in the shower room which completes the ground-floor layout. An elegant king-size bedroom with antique-style bed, ample storage and spirit-lifting views fills the first floor. Below, your private patio has outdoor furniture and looks across a large shared lawn to the River Alde.
A reputed base of Boudica and the Iceni tribes, Iken was used in the 19th century by the barges that traded corn and coal between Snape, London and the east coast ports. Today an occasional vessel may be seen making its way at high tide to the former maltings at Snape (2 miles), now a famous arts centre proffering shopping, food and drinks to satisfy every appetite. The gentle countryside all around offers lots of opportunity for walks; follow the 6-mile Sailor’s Path from Snape Maltings to Aldeburgh (8 miles) where you can buy freshly caught fish and shop in a trendy selection of independent stores. Further along the Alde, Orford (5 miles) is home to a 12th-century castle keep, pretty quay and Orford Ness, an area of historic and environmental fascination.
