In the heart of Appledore, this ground-floor apartment is an ideal choice for a couple seeking a chic getaway by the sea that is still close to amenities. You and your canine companions will love exploring the cobbled streets, dog-friendly pubs and bustling quayside of this traditional fishing village, as well as sniffing out more of the North Devon coastline with beach trips and walks along the South West Coast Path. When you’re not out and about, spend time reading or sipping cups of coffee in the sunny conservatory, throwing your pups the occasional biscuit for good behaviour.
After entering the property via the owners’ house, you can begin to make yourself at home as you curl up in the cosy lounge next to the wood burner and Smart TV. On warm days, scamper up the external steps that lead from the enclosed shared courtyard to the raised private terrace. Here you can relax with your contented canines and fire up the BBQ for an al fresco treat. Be aware that the owners occasionally pass through the courtyard to access their outbuilding but aim to do this while guests are out to ensure privacy. When tiredness finally hits, tuck your pups up in their beds before you retreat to the double bedroom for a good night’s sleep.
From Appledore quayside, take the dog-friendly passenger ferry to Instow for a pub lunch overlooking the estuary. It runs from Easter to the end of October and offers a scenic way to explore both sides of the River Torridge. Lead the way on a 2-mile walk around the coast to Northam Burrows Country Park and onwards to the sweeping beach at Westward Ho!, part of which is open to dogs all year round. Elsewhere, RHS Garden Rosemoor (12 miles) offers dedicated dog-friendly days.
