Go mutts and experience the unique delights of a stay at this off-grid shepherd’s hut for two, set amid some of Scotland’s most dramatic landscapes. Bring your pup and get active with outdoor adventures of all kinds, or simply sit back on the raised deck and enjoy the lakeside views.

Reconnect with nature with your furry friend at your side, enjoying the simple pleasures of this characterful shepherd’s hut. Five wooden steps lead up to the timber-clad interior, where a small wood burner provides warmth whatever the season. Use it to make a morning coffee or a night-time hot chocolate, sitting back in the wooden armchair or the rocking chair as your hound snoozes in his bed. A vintage cabinet is not only decorative but also holds practical essentials for your stay, and a custom-made, king-size bed tucked along the far end provides a comfortable space for dreamy sleep, made up with nostalgic linens, a British-wool quilt and warm blankets. Separate from the hut, an off-grid shower with hot and cold running water and a composting WC (no smell and full instructions provided) offer convenience without compromising the hut’s rustic charm. The outdoor kitchen includes a small gas stove, charcoal BBQ and small evaporative cooler, with a washing-up area that overlooks the loch. A picnic table and Adirondack chairs by the fire pit invite long evenings enjoying the dark, starlit sky. Parking for two cars is provided just above the hut.

The hut sits on a working farm about 6 miles from Castle Douglas, and 13.5 miles from Sandyhills Beach, where dogs are welcome all year round. This is a superb base for exploring the Galloway Hills, renowned for their remote and rugged atmosphere, and there are endless opportunities for tail-wagging walks and outdoor activities amid stunning scenery.
