If holidaying on the edge of a freshwater loch tickles your fancy, book a stay at this simply wonderful holiday home in the Scottish Highlands. Take your pets on long, happy walks through beautiful heather-covered moorland followed by quiet evenings in with the wood burner blazing. This spot puts you just 7 miles from Caingorms National Park, where you and your pets can explore rivers, forest paths and mountain trails galore. There's space for up to six humans and two dogs – great for an annual family holiday or birthday celebration among friends.

This stone property has a U-shaped layout with an enclosed garden in the middle where your four-pawed friends can let off steam. Inside, the décor is colourful and quirky, with tartan upholstery and patterned rugs. The spacious open-plan living area is a cheerful space for socialising, either cooking up meals or tickling the dogs' bellies on the sofas. A spiral staircase from the main area leads up to a gallery where the dogs will find more potential snooze spots. In the stunning conservatory, absorb panoramic views over Lochindorb as you enjoy coffee and a slice (or two) of buttery shortbread. The views will mean your dogs will feel like they are outside even when they aren't!

The loch is a great place for morning walkies; listen out to the call (or squeak!) of lapwings as you stroll. Grantown-on-Spey (10.5 miles) is the base for discovering the Strathspey area – head there for supplies before setting off into the countryside nearby. This town is on the Speyside Malt Whisky Trail, where you can test your sense of smell on an array of delicious single malts. If the dogs are the hiking types, pull on your walking boots and walk or scramble up one of many peaks in the Cairngorms.

This is a unique holiday cottage in a fantastically beautiful location. The remoteness means that there is an extensive range of wildlife, including some very rare birds and animals. The cottage itself is beautifully furnished and equipped and has the atmosphere of a family home.

Lovely cottage in a great location for bird life and with fantastic far reaching views across the loch to the mountains. The rough track to get there probably means you are best to use an SUV or 4x4. It all adds to the atmosphere though. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
