For a nice middle ground, try the Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (19.5 miles) where you can explore, go on guided tours, or check out various exhibitions. If you need supplies or fancy a meal out, try Cockermouth, which has shops and dog-friendly pubs.
