You can’t teach an old dog new tricks – but you can show her a new holiday home she’s bound to adore. This 15th-century cottage is a perfect base for pooch-pleasingly long walks in the Yorkshire Dales and Peak District National Parks. There’s plenty to delight human guests too: the house features gorgeous original wooden beams and is surrounded by breathtaking views. The cottage sleeps up to four guests and one dog so is great for a couple, family or small group of friends.

The property has an open-plan lounge/kitchen/diner, with plenty of space for stretching out, whether you’ve got two legs or four – sink into one of the sofas and admire the surrounding views through the large glass doors. Outside, there’s an enclosed courtyard to keep Buddy safe if he’s the type to run off when excited. In this area, you’ll find garden furniture for chilling out as well as a BBQ for if you want to sizzle up a feast in the open air. At night, head to one of two bedrooms and drift off to sleep to the sounds of local sheep bleating along with contented snoring from your canine.

The nearby Hartington village (1.5 miles) has a welcoming feel to it, with a duck pond and two dog-friendly pubs. Why not stop a while and pop into a pub for a delicious cream tea or afternoon coffee? When it’s time for a long, afternoon walk, pack up Buddy’s favourite tennis ball and head out to the High Peak or Tissington Trail for hours of wandering through the wonderful wilderness. For a day trip, head to the spa town of Buxton (13 miles) with its ornamental gardens and impressive Georgian and Victorian architecture.

A very quiet and peaceful location ideal if you want to just explore the countryside. Hartington village a short drive away with adequate shops for provisions and a fabulous cheese shop ! This was our third stay at this cottage so you must be doing something right.

Small but beautiful cottage and absolutely stunning views. There is no WiFi and a 5 minute drive from Hartington village on a narrow country road with potholes but still worth the drive. We loved our stay there and the beds were so comfy and great area to explore the Peak District.

They should introduce a 6th star in the reviews for places like this. The cottage is lovely and cosy and we had such a relaxing time as it's so peaceful. The views are stunning and we spent the evenings outside watching the sunset and listening to the birds. The 10 minute walk down to the River Dove is well worth a go - the river is beautiful, as iRead mores the surrounding area. The cottage was very clean and comfortable and we will definitely be revisiting. An amazing place! Hide

Dove Valley Cottage was nice and remote for us and our pooch. The cottage itself is cozy in the winter with central heating.
