  • Delightful country cottage on the edge of the Cotswolds perfect for exploring the beautiful Oxfordshire countryside
  • Pretty rural retreat just a few miles from Bampton used as the film set for Downton Abbey
  • Just 2 miles from the market town of Witney with a choice of shops, pubs and restaurants
Property code: OC-82478

The characterful cottage sleeps six guests and one pup. The property is on the fringe of the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, giving you easy access to a multitude of pretty villages and winding country walks to explore with your four-pawed pal. You’ll also be just 8 miles from the ancient market town of Bampton, where many of the village scenes in Downton Abbey were filmed.

Open the quaint garden gate and walk through the garden to the back door. Once inside, you’ll discover a spectacular kitchen/diner, with ample room for the dog bed and a large dining table to enjoy mealtimes together. In the evenings, snuggle up on the sofa or in an armchair in the cosy lounge. This area is full of character, with exposed beams and stonework and a roaring wood burner for Rover to stretch out in front of. Cottage-style stairs lead to the first floor, where you’ll find a king-size and a double bedroom. The stairs then lead to a further delightful double bedroom, with gorgeous original low beams (just be careful of the restricted head height). Outside, there’s an enclosed lawn which the woofer will love playing on whilst you relax on the patio with a glass of wine.

The Wychwood Forest area has some spectacular dog walks. Head to Woodstock (10.5 miles) to join The Wychwood Way, which is a circular trail around the heart of the forest, taking you through rolling farmland, ancient woodland and rural villages. Another great doggy day out is Blenheim Palace (11.5 miles). Although four-legged visitors aren’t permitted in the formal gardens, there are two wonderful waymarked trails through the extensive grounds surrounding the palace, providing glorious views of the magnificent building.

  • 3 bedrooms – 2 doubles and 1 king-size
  • 2 bathroom - 1 bathroom with shower over bath and WC and 1 shower room with WC
  • Electric double oven and gas hob, microwave, fridge/freezer and washing machine
  • Smart TV in the lounge
  • Wood burner - first basket of logs included in the colder months
  • Uneven floors and steep stairs due to age of property
  • Private off-road parking for 2 cars
  • Travel cot and highchair available
  • Enclosed garden with seating
  • Shop 2 miles and pub under 0.25 miles
  • Arrival: 16:00 onwards

We found that the cottage still needed the repairs mentioned in previous comments to be completed.

Nice cottage overall and good location, parking ok even for two medium sized cars. Few observations - 1. Garden could have been tended to for the aesthetics of the whole exterior. Grass was overgrown and weeds 2. Hidden Hole on landing floor covered by carpet - did go over, luckily no injury 3. Cobwebs in cottage 4. No logs or matches, called; had Read moreto buy logs - no promised refund (maybe forgot) 5. Cistern loose in en-suite rattled 6. Sockets not attached and loose in wall of top But, Enjoyed! Hide

This cottage is very pretty and is equipped to a reasonable standard. It is within walking distance to a local pub and a short drive to Witney where there are a large selection of shops and places to eat.

The cottage was very quaint and charming, however, the stairs are difficult to negotiate when carrying luggage upstairs. The rope bannister is not very helpful and actually came apart on my first visit to the top bedroom. This was a major health and safety issue which could have led to me falling downstairs!! Very pleasant traditional cottage. Quint fireplace and log burner. Well maintained and plenty of cupboard staples. A nice touch with the picnic basket of essentials. The weather allowed us to sit in the garden and enjoy the country .

Expensive given the condition/cleanliness of the property which is worn and not at its best. The owner is not local so there is no provision made for emergencies. The king bed fell apart and there were no means to put it together or have someone come and fix. The owner did not offer any resolve and was resistant to compensate. This tarnished our stRead moreay and wasted precious time and energy during our weekend away. The way this was managed could have totally changed our perception regardless of issue Hide

Disappointing. The kitchen was well equipped, but the fridge and the floor needed cleaning. We slept the first night on the (smelly) couch as the main bed had animal hairs and stains throughout the sheets. To her credit, the owner responded promptly and ordered new sheets the following day. The ensuite shower had a lot of black mould, which you couRead moreld smell in the main bedroom. The highlight was the pub up the road - The Lamb & Flag - best food, and a great atmosphere. We'd go to the pub again. Hide

Cosy cottage - we really enjoyed the location, local walks and the log burner in the evenings. Very atmospheric. Very helpful welcome box of basics upon arrival. Communicative and very helpful host, sorted out a replacement for us within 24 hours when the kettle broke! Worth noting the property isnt suitable for those with mobility issues as the stRead moreairs are very steep and narrow as described. Same with the low ceilings and the fact there is only a bath (no shower) in main bathroom. Hide

Generally all good. Central heating in the cold weather not sufficient for small children. Area would be nice in spring/summer, rather drab in winter. Might be an idea to check kitchen equipment. Kettle past its sell by date. Warn new renters that parking for two cars can be difficult, neighbours obviously not a happy bunch. Witney town is worth a Read morevisit and easy to get to. Definitely better than queuing for planes at Christmas though. Hide
