Set within the picturesque ruins of Beauvale Priory on a working farm, this delightful cottage is one of two that have been lovingly restored. Also known as Pulchra Vallis, the Carthusian Priory was a place of silence for 200 years, so seclusion and tranquillity were essential. The ruins and grounds in this captivating vale are particularly pretty in spring. Roam with your four-legged pals amidst ancient woods and stones, and relax in the Tea Rooms as modern stresses melt away. There’s wondrous countryside all around to explore. Kids tired of peace will love the Red Kangaroo Trampoline Park (6 miles), with its parkour course, half-pipe and Dodgeball court.

The cottage’s interior is a charming blend of ancient and modern. The open-plan lounge/kitchen/diner is collected around the hearth and wood burner, with each area retaining a cosy sense of intimacy that’s in keeping with the building’s history. Wood, brick and stone combine superbly with rustic furniture, sweet ceramics and stylish modern technology. Upstairs, the double bedroom is a soft and peaceful haven with fresh fabrics and an Edwardian feel. The twin is bright and welcoming, with wonderful wooded views. Outside, an enclosed seating area offers a relaxing spot for Fido to soak up the sunshine.

Nottingham (9 miles) is a splendid medieval city. The Grade II listed Cathedral has a sublime interior designed by Pugin; also worth seeing is the magnificent Papplewick Pumping Station. Explore the myriad of twisting lanes, independent shops, eateries, museums, galleries and dog-friendly pubs. Kids will love The Adrenaline Jungle with its karting, quad-biking and archery. Visit Wollaton Hall’s 500 acres of spectacular gardens and the Theatre Royal. Cresswell Crags (27 miles) is a tremendous ancient landscape of caves and tunnels and the wide Welbeck Estate in Sherwood Forest (30 miles) has an excellent farm shop and gallery. Find new passions in the heart of England!

This peaceful hideaway is well equipped and very comfortable, located well for forrest walks, sitting watching the wild life, going to local attractions including National Trust places. Disappointing stay compared to our last visit. Basics were missing or not working properly and there was inadequate follow up. Worst thing was loud music on site until 4.30am on New Years night; I had to personally go and complain about the noise and ask for it to be turned down. As paying guests, we did not feel we were a priority. Left 2 days earRead morely. Hide

Our stay was comfortable and quiet and we really enjoyed the cosy feeling, especially having a fire each evening, as well as the well equipped kitchen for cooking in which we did every day. It was easy to get to the sites we wanted to visit, like Nottingham, a local canal walk, and Hardwick Hall, or stay in and take a local walk. Really loved the oRead morensite Tea Room and took advantage of Bakehouse orders too! Hide

We visited with our 2 grandchildren and had a wonderful time. It would be very difficult to find better hosts, and the property is clean, quiet and comfortable. Add to this the fact that it's dog-friendly, and it becomes difficult to beat!
