The town is famous for the striking Middleham Castle – once home to Richard III – and its racehorse heritage, so don’t be surprised to see elegant thoroughbreds passing by on their daily routines. There are routes to pathways straight from the doorstep for walkies with your canine friend, Climb up Penhill or wander along the River Cover, where paddling spots await. Leyburn (2 miles) has a good mix of independent shops and a weekly market in which to sniff out some local produce.
