This peaceful retreat in Cumbria is an absolute dream for dogs, set on a peaceful smallholding and surrounded by some of England’s most unspoilt scenery. The converted shepherd’s hut is ideal for solo travellers or couples wishing to holiday with their beloved pets. You’ll have sweeping views of the fells to the east and the coast to the west, plus an abundance of paths, trails and bridleways weaving through right from your doorstep. The village of Gosforth (3.5 miles) offers a handy selection of shops, pubs and eateries, while the coast is just 3 miles away, where completely dog-friendly beaches at Seascale, St Bees and Silecroft provide plenty of space for sandy-pawed adventures.
You’ll access this sweet and quirky property via four steps leading up to the double doors. Once inside, a welcoming open-plan space combines living, dining, cooking and sleeping areas. The king-size bed sits at one end, while a foldaway dining table creates a flexible spot for meals. The compact kitchenette has everything you need for simple cooking, and the en-suite shower room includes a flushing WC, hot-and-cold water and soft towels. Outside, relax with your pets on the private terrace, where you can dine in the fresh air before enjoying a late-night soak in the wood-fired hot tub. Dogs will enjoy the countryside setting, though care may be needed around the free-roaming animals on the smallholding, including alpacas, donkeys and sheep. Private parking for one car is available.
Beyond the smallholding, head inland to the Lake District National Park to explore Eskdale (5.5 miles) and the dramatic shores of Wastwater (6.5 miles). Up for a challenge? Tackle the slopes of Scafell Pike (9 miles), England’s highest mountain. For something more leisurely, hop aboard the Ravenglass and Eskdale Steam Railway (5.5 miles), or visit historic sites such as Muncaster Castle (dogs welcome in the grounds) and Hardknott Roman Fort (both within 11 miles).
