What could be finer for friends, families and four-pawed pals than a Scottish island escape to this idyllic cottage, set within a tower courtyard on the west coast of Arran. The stretching sands of Machrie Bay (1 mile) and Machrie Moor Stone Circle (3.5 miles) are at the heart of a rolling green wilderness for you and your faithful friends to explore. Climb Goatfell for sublime panoramic views from the island’s highest point.

Inside you’ll find a bright and airy first-floor interior, with sunlight streaming in through Velux windows in the beautifully sloping ceiling (mind your head!). After magical days of adventure, gather in the gorgeous lounge/diner around the glowing fireplace with a gleaming glass of island whisky. Conjure feasts of fine local fare in the bright kitchen, with everything you need within easy reach, and then step outside to dine alfresco under the stars. Soak in a steaming bath before nightcaps and sweet Arran dreams in the two tranquil bedrooms. Contemporary local art and exquisite framed photos never let you forget the wild gem of a landscape of which you’re a part. In the morning, explore the estate on two feet or four – there’s so much to discover.

Spot red squirrels at Brodick Castle and Gardens and find brilliant beer at the Isle of Arran Brewery (both 11 miles) or sample a dram at the Isle of Arran Distillery in Lochranza (14 miles). Join Ocean Breeze Rib Tours to see porpoises and peregrines and learn the mysteries of Ailsa Craig. Humans and hounds will adore exploring the Arran Coastal Way from mountains to beaches, through forests, Iron Age hill forts and delightful villages, spotting whales, eagles and basking sharks as you go, while Holy Isle (19 miles) will soothe your spirit.

The Bothy was fantastic. Really spacious and light and never got too hot, despite the very high temperatures on the island, whilst we were there. There was plenty of kitchen equipment and having the washer-dryer was a godsend, since we were staying for two weeks. The Bothy was the perfect cottage for our stay in Arran, with gorgeous views on the doorstep and all mod cons after a long day hiking. On the west side of the Island, it was out of the main tourist sites (Brodick, Lamlash and Whiting Bay) but easy to access all areas of the island. The Dougarie estate itself is beautiful and there is a gorgeous walRead morek up the glen right on the doorstep. Hide

The location is perfect . There is a very good tea room close by and a shop is also not far. We had absolutely fabulous time at the Towers. It's spacious, quiet and clean. It stands on an expansive grounds with lots of phesants. It is a kind of dreamlike place.

We booked the Bothy for 2 of us and I had some reservations about our choice. As it happened the Towers for 8 people was vacant and the owners re-located us there 3 days before our departure without charge because building work was continuing on the Bothy to insert a new window and tile the roof. This was a significant upgrade for us. There is no sRead moreeating area outside the Bothy and the surroundings are like a builders yard as there is other building work taking place. Hide

The Bothy is a very comfortable 1st floor apartment set in the working courtyard of the Dougarie estate. The accommodation is roomy for 3 or 4 people with very comfortable beds, cosy sofas and a well-sized dining table. All of the windows are roof-lights/velux windows, so although they don't make best use of the lovely views the space is very lightRead more and airy. We had a lovely stay, the location is glorious, a short walk down the lodge drive to the beach and on the beautiful Glen Iorsa footpath. Hide
