The perfect bolthole for a romantic retreat and your third-wheeling pup, scamper off for a holiday in the wonderful Welsh countryside. The roaring wood burner, cosy rugs and sofas, and bags of charm will make sure no one has their tail tucked between their legs as you arrive at this humble abode. With your four-legged friends in tow, we know that the outside space is just as important as the inside – if not more so. Sitting on the owner’s 300-acre farm, with the Nant Menasgin river flowing through it, walk straight from your door and kick start the day with a wild swim and a splash-worthy game of fetch.

Step up and into the property which is attached to the owner’s home. Two-legged guests can admire the exposed beams and exposed brickwork which flows throughout the house, whilst those with four legs head straight to sniff out the snooze spots. The lounge is treated to a wood burner which promises to keep the chill at bay and provides a warming welcome after days outdoors. With plenty of space for the all-important treat jar and your provisions, rustle up feasts in the light kitchen before dining at the table or descending a step and taking a plate outside to the patio. The shower room sits on the ground floor, making it easy to wash off any mud picked up during walks. Climb steep stairs to rest your head in the bedroom which boasts fantastic views across the Black Mountains and has a characterful sloping ceiling.

Forget the car and explore nearby, starting with a swim for all in the winding Nant Menasgin river and finishing with a roam of the woodlands where plenty of sticks and scents await. Around 8 miles from home sits Pen-y-Fan, the highest peak in South Wales, where the panoramic views are well worth the climb.

This was such a perfect weekend! The Old Toolshed is warm, cosy, spotlessly clean and you cannot fault the location. The kitchen was surprisingly well equipped, including an air fryer! You can walk straight into the Bannau Brycheiniog National Park and also a lovely long woodlands walk following a stream directly from the farm. Thomas, the owner, iRead mores lovely and welcoming and allowed us to park in the campsite once we'd checked out to do another long walk. The only slight downside is how steep the steps are up to the bedroom, which are much more like a ladder than stairs, which you might struggle with if you had limited mobility or had a few pints! For us it was perfect though as it meant our dog could not jump on the bed with muddy paws. I'd highly recommend this place and we will be back Hide

Although attached to the main farmhouse, the cottage provides very peaceful and private accommodation for a couple, with great Dark Sky experiences. Our host was both welcoming and friendly and provided a wealth local information. If needed the wifi connection is excellent. Highly recommended

The cottage is remote and surrounded by the nature and wildlife of the black mountains. You can walk straight from the door to great walks. We enjoyed the location very much. The cottage itself was conform to the description and we had no disappointment. Thanks to Thomas for the warm welcome. We could come back some day.

Perfect location for a walking weekend, well equipped for self catering and the log burner kept us cosy. We hope to return for a dark sky experience which was missing on the very cloudy week.

Great location with walks directly from the cottage. Road was single track for last mile or so but not an issue meeting other vehicles. Friendly owner advised on local walking routes.
