Hidden away in a tranquil apple orchard, this traditional cottage is not to be sniffed at. With waymarked paths leading through the owner’s fruit farm, families and friends, including furry ones, will enjoy exploring the stunning Herefordshire landscape from this rural retreat. Follow in ancient footsteps as you walk Offa’s Dyke Path, picnic in the gardens of historic homes, or uncover medieval history in the cathedral town of Hereford.

With wonderful views across the orchards and estate gardens, this two-bedroom cottage offers bright accommodation full of natural light. Relax in the open-plan lounge/diner after a day walking the hills, curled up in one of the comfortable sofas while your hound snoozes in front of the open fire. Prepare a hearty breakfast in the farmhouse-style kitchen to fuel you for the day ahead – there is plenty of room for your canine companion’s food bowls too. At the end of the day, climb upstairs to the two bedrooms, one double and one twin which share a family bathroom. Outside, your four-legged friend can stretch out on the south-facing enclosed terrace while you fire up the BBQ.

The historic town of Kington (3 miles) offers plenty of opportunities to discover the hills and valleys of Herefordshire on foot and paw. Enjoy breathtaking scenery along the Mortimer Trail, taking you from Ridgeway to woodland. Follow the Arrow Valley Walk where your hound can splash in the shallows of the river and investigate interesting smells along the riverbank. Take the lead and hire a canoe to explore the River Wye with your canine companion onboard, before browsing the bookshops in Hay-on-Wye (16 miles).
