Take time out as a couple – with up to two dogs in tow – at this quaint stone cottage. With the river burbling by, it shouldn’t be too hard to switch off on your Lake District trip, and with its brilliant location there’s plenty of outdoorsy fun and stunning walks to be had from the doorstep. Characterful on the outside, this property offers cute interiors with all the modern conveniences you need to make for a really comfortable stay.

After a hard day's fell walking and exploring the sights of the Lakes with your faithful furry friends, the stylish open-plan lounge/kitchen/diner at this pretty cottage makes a brilliant retreat. With a modern kitchen along one wall, you can do as much (or as little!) self-catering as you want, opting to eat at the dining table or on the sofa while watching the Smart TV. This single-storey property seamlessly pairs historic touches like the window seat, cottage doors and flagstone floors with modern design and sleek, space-saving ideas. Cosy up by the wood burner in cooler months, or sit on the furnished patio and enjoy the river from the enclosed garden with slate and lawned areas. There’s private parking for one car which helps reduce stress levels.

With its superb Skelwith Bridge location, you can grab the dog leads and take your pick of walks. From the keen stroller to the full-blown fell walker, there’s something for everyone. Ambleside (2.5 miles), aka ‘the jewel in Lakeland’s crown’, makes a great stop for eating, drinking and checking out the shops. Only 8 miles away, tranquil Grasmere is a picture-postcard village with links to William Wordsworth and a famous shop selling traditional gingerbread since 1854. There’s a small lake just outside the village, and breathtaking views all around.
