Escape to the quiet hamlet of Outgate with a stay at this beautiful Lakeland cottage. Sleeping four guests across two restful bedrooms, this is the perfect base for couples and small families planning Lake District adventures together. Stroll straight from the door to Tarn Hows (2.5 miles) for a postcard loop, or head 2.5 miles in the opposite direction towards Windermere's scenic shoreline. Coniston (5 miles) is also within easy reach for lakeside walks and steamboat spotting, while Esthwaite Water (2.5 miles) is ideal for a quieter circuit and some fishing. Food-wise, you're spoiled for choice, with the Outgate Inn just around the corner and the world-famous Drunken Duck awaiting a mile away. Pop into Hawkshead (1.5 miles) for the Beatrix Potter Gallery or head to Ambleside (4 miles) for picturesque tea rooms, two cinemas, and a climb up Wansfell Pike.

Step inside this tastefully preserved cottage and you'll immediately notice characterful features such as the exposed oak beams and original stone walls. You'll be greeted by the beautiful lounge/diner, which is warmed by a multi -fuel burner on those chillier days. Unwind in here after days spent outdoors; sink into the soft seating, flick on the TV, and start planning tomorrow's itinerary. Nearby, the round wooden dining table invites you to gather around for pre-hike breakfasts and post-adventure dinners. Cook your holiday feasts in the unique kitchen, where an original iron grate sits alongside modern appliances for an easy self-catered stay. When it's time to call it a night, follow the steep cottage stairs to the first floor and choose from two pretty bedrooms: a master bedroom with a king-size four-poster bed, and a cosy twin featuring a period fireplace. Completing the home is a downstairs bathroom with a bath and WC, plus a separate shower room – meaning no queues in the morning.

When the sun shines, spill outside to the walled garden, where pretty flower beds surround a small lawn space with outdoor dining furniture. Enjoy peaceful morning coffees and al fresco evening meals out here, and take advantage of the secure storage for your bikes. Completing the property is garage parking for one car, making your arrival and day trips a breeze.

This cottage has been thoughtfully and skilfully fitted to provide a real home from home. The location is wonderful for walking, we stayed a week and didn't use the car at all.

Second time we have stayed here over Christmas. Felt lucky it was available second year running. Cosy and comfortable. Great for the dogs. Clean and smells fresh, not foggy at all. Only complaint would be that the heating system must have changed as it was connected to WiFi which kept dropping out. Was without hot water but once reported, respondedRead more to very quickly and knew how to remedy it following that Hide

What a perfect Christmas vacation! Reminded me a little of The Holiday but without Jude Law! Felt really at home and cosy and warm. Fully enclosed garden for the dogs (this isn't listed as enclosed so was a lovely bonus). Allowed an extra dog :) Despite what can be a busy nearby road, it was so quiet and peaceful, even during night with window openRead more. Owl hooting a couple of nights, also a lovely touch! Beds were really comfy. If I'm being really picky, the pillows were too soft and unsupportive. That's my only complaint! Oh, that, and an outdoor tap installed would be good for washing dogs and bikes. I took a camping shower from Amazon for 25 and washed the dogs at front. Location is spot on for walkers, bikers, runners, and pub goers. Can do a decent dog walking pub crawl between Outgate Inn, Drunken Duck and into Hawkshead, all within a 5 mile circular. Will 100% visit again. Hide

We would definitely recommend a stay at Rose Lea Cottage. It was a lovely cottage and we immediately felt at home, as did our dog who was able to enjoy the super enclosed garden. Superb cottage with great walks straight from the door. Enclosed garden was perfect for our puppy. Felt like a real home rather than sterile holiday rental. Would definatly stay again.

Really lovely cottage and beautiful garden. Private garage for a small car, quiet location just set off from a quiet B road. Easy 10 minute drive to Ambleside, surrounded by walks. Didn't feel at all touristy, despite us being there! Thanks, great stay.

Rose Lea cottage has everything you would need for a lovely stay. It has a beautiful fully enclosed safe garden for the dog and having an escape artist this really helped put my mind at ease. Not too far from anywhere by car and away from the crowds. The garage is small as others have said but I had no issue with it. I will be back!
