Stroll along the River Rothay or into the heart of Grasmere village, renowned for its largely unchanged shop selling gingerbread since 1854. The Grasmere Lake waterside path is fairly unchallenging, or the Fairfield Horseshoe 3 miles away is a more challenging day walk – rewarded by lovely fell views. Dove Cottage is the former home of William Wordsworth, now a museum. Or take to the water with a boat trip in Ambleside or Windermere, both within 9 miles.
