For serious walkies in glorious countryside followed by evenings in front of the wood burner, this eco house in Soulby is bound to set tails wagging. Designed for families or friends, plus two canine pals, it lies between the North Pennines and the Yorkshire Dales, with walking trails straight from the front door.

Huge windows give this environmentally friendly home a wonderful sense of light, with natural tones and textures inside. In the open-plan living space there’s plenty of room for dog beds near the seating in the lounge area, where you’ll want to spend time admiring the garden views or enjoying a show on the TV. There’s also a separate snug, which features a double-sided wood burner and a sofa that converts to a single bed if requested in advance. The kitchen includes a double oven and a microwave, perfect for whipping up holiday hearty meals, to be enjoyed at the island or the central dining table. A single bedroom and a large wet room complete the ground floor. Head up the open-tread spiral staircase to find two further bedrooms. Both king-size, one has a Juliet balcony and an en-suite hidden behind a mirror, the other boasts impressive Pennine views. A family bathroom completes this level. There’s a lawned area outside, part of which slopes steeply down to the unfenced river, plus a decked patio furnished for meals in the fresh air. Your four-pawed pals will especially love the enclosed paddock, where they’re free to run and play. Private parking is available for three cars.

The Eden Valley is criss-crossed with walking trails which you can follow from your door, including a riverside path that leads along the summit of the Nine Standards. In Kirkby Stephen, 2.5 miles away, you can join the iconic Wainwright’s Coast to Coast trail.

We had a great week in this really nice and unusual eco house. Great kitchen area and spacious enough to allow us all to share in food preparation. We appreciated the thoughtful touches of coffee, milk, yummy crisps etc left for us. The house is in a lovely position down a quiet lane with a river running along the garden. Soulby is an attracRead moretive small village with friendly neighbours very close to Kirkby Stephen which is charming small market town. Decking is well placed for sun both morning and evening, which meant we were able to sit out for breakfast with the birds and sound of the river a couple of days even though it wasn't summer yet. On the cooler days it was lovely and warm in the house. Very sad to leave there at the end of the week! Hide
