At a glance

  • A quaint charming character cottage dating back to 1750 yet with modern finishes
  • Walking distance to the harbour, restaurants, pubs and shops.
  • Set in a quiet location on a street of pretty pastel-coloured cottages, ideal location for exploring the North Coast.
Property code: OC-S31008

Located in the iconic Irsha Street in the historic fishing village of Appledore, this quirky cottage is perfectly placed for couples and small families to uncover the beauty of North Devon with their four-pawed third wheel. Return from the bustling quayside to the tastefully designed cottage with thoughtful interiors and plush linens for added comfort.

Hang up the leash in the entrance hallway before leading the way into the light and bright lounge to unwind; your canine companion will love curling in the sunny spots streaming in from the large picture window. Brimming with rustic character, the dining room is the perfect spot to plan tomorrow’s walkies before stepping up into the adjoining kitchen to tame the growl of hungry tummies. Up the steep cottage stairs, you’ll find the family bathroom and two bedrooms, one double and one super-king-size zip-and-link (can be made up as a twin), which feature original beams. Due to the age of the cottage, certain doorways have limited headroom. Outside, enjoy the distant sounds of the harbour as you dine alfresco in the enclosed courtyard. There’s a payable public car park within 20 metres and on-street parking within 100 metres.

As charming and quaint as they come, the fishing village of Appledore is tucked away on a hillside along the North Devon coastline. From the quayside, jump aboard the seasonal ferry to cross to the sandy stretch of beach at Instow (5 miles away by car) and treat your pup to hours of fun exploring the magnificent dunes (seasonal restrictions apply). Join up with the traffic-free Tarka Trail from Bideford (4 miles), following a disused railway line, to be rewarded with superb coastal and woodland views.

  • 2 bedrooms – 1 super-king-size zip-and-link, which can be made into a twin, 1 double
  • 1 bathroom with bath, separate shower cubicle and WC
  • Electric oven and hob, microwave, fridge/freezer, dishwasher, Nespresso coffee machine
  • Outbuilding utility space with washing machine, wetsuit storage and WC
  • Smart TV, Bluetooth speaker
  • Small enclosed courtyard with outdoor furniture
  • Payable public car park within 20 metres, on-street parking within 100 metres
  • Shops and pubs 0.5 miles, beach 1 mile
  • Please note there is limited headroom in some doorways and the stairs are steep with a fixed handrail in place
  • Arrival: 16:00 onwards
  • Departure: before 10:00
  • 1 dog allowed. Additional charges may apply

This is our third stay at Shipwrights and we're already looking forward to coming back. The cottage is beautifully decorated and well equipped. The location is perfect - close to a local car park but a very short stroll to the sea front and local shops. The small outbuilding is perfect for drying wetsuits and having a washing machine is key for us Read morewith two small children. It does have some steep steps and low ceilings (we very much appreciated the helpful padding for those of us that sometimes forget to duck!) so probably not suitable for those with severe mobility issues. It is dog friendly so again might not be suitable if you have allergies, otherwise we'd definitely recommend. Hide

We spent a lovely few days in this beautifully renovated cottage. It was well equipped, very comfortable and warm for a chilly November stay. The cottage was full of character with a few low doors and sloping floors adding to its character. It was lovely to be back in Appledore with a new generation and to see the changes and welcome new additions Read moreto the village, including the Coffee Cabin (good coffee and breakfasts) and The Bakery. Fun music night at The Champ pub and great pizza from the Flame Factory. Hide

We have stayed in 4 different cottages in Irsha Street. Shipwrights was definitely the best so far.

Such a lovely cottage we've already stayed there twice. Very conveniently located for a local car park and beautifully furnished throughout. Well equipped kitchen, comfortable beds and a powerful shower. The bath is quite short by design, I found it very comfortable but you might find it a bit short if you're very tall. There are some low doorwRead moreays and the stairs are quite steep but it's all in keeping with the character of the cottage. I'm sure we'll be back again. Hide

Beautiful recently renovated cottage in a great location, steps away from the SW Coast Path route through the village and just minutes from the heart of the village and all of its wonderful facilities.
